SHS Sports Wrap

A look back at this week in sports for Southington High School.

As Halloween approaches, so does the end of the regular season for most sports teams. With the exception of cross country and football, Blue Knight squads continue to battle for postseason berths and positioning.

Friday, Oct. 21 – Football

Glastonbury 19, Southington 16

The Blue Knights took a 16-6 lead into the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold on at Glastonbury. After Southington’s Corbin Garry returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown, the Blue Knights had a 10-point lead but the Tomahawks scored twice in the final 11 minutes to pull out the win.

Andrew Walowski had 90 yards rushing and Matt O’Connor 69 for Southington, but the Blue Knights had only 54 yards total offense in the second half.

Friday, Oct. 21 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Farmington 2

Tori Broytman had 24 kills, 10 digs and 4 blocks as Southington held on at home for the 25-17, 20-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13 victory. Danielle Kaminsky had 42 assists and 13 digs and Corinne Horanzy had 11 kills for the Blue Knights. Sara Malicka had 18 digs and Cyndy Woolley 16 digs for Southington.

Friday, Oct. 21 – Field Hockey
Southington 3, Wethersfield 0

Sarah Collier, Sarah Pelligrinelli and Rachel Dorsey scored in the home victory. Val Szmurlo had one save in net as Southington rebounded from a 5-2 loss to Fermi on Wednesday in Enfield.

Friday, Oct. 21 – Girls Swimming
Southington 92, East Catholic 76

Haley Marquardt won the 200 yard freestyle in 2:11.26 and Laurel Dean was first in the 200 IM at 2:20.31 as the Blue Knights picked up the home win.

Sarah Krzesik won the 100 butterfly in 1:07.31 and Melanie Mongillo was first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:01.14. The quartet of Marquardt, Jenny Drozd, Mongillo and Emily Ferens won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:14.95 and the foursome of Dean, Mongillo, Krzesik and Molly Potter won the 200 medley relay in 2:05.70.

Friday, Oct. 21 – Boys Soccer
Farmington 5, Southington 0

The Indians scored five goals in the final six minutes of the first half to win at home. Bill Queen had 11 saves for Southington.

Thursday, Oct. 20 – Boys Cross Country
CCC Championships at Wickham Park, Manchester

Kyle Hamel finished third in 17:09.91 as Southington finished 12th out of 27 teams at the conference championship meet.

Nick Garcia was 31st in 18:22.28, followed by Miles Groom (86th, 19:31.85), Damiaen Florian (93rd, 19:44.54), Joe Pappalardo (103rd, 19:57.69), Jordan Gray (109th, 20:03.58) and Jacob Harton (112th, 20:08.16). Southington finished fifth out of seven teams in the CCC West.

Thursday, Oct. 20 – Girls Cross Country
CCC Championships at Wickham Park, Manchester

Amanda Hamel led Southington with a 60th-place time of 23:23.48 as the Blue Knights finished 14th out of 24 teams.

Hannah Chamis was 74th in 23:53.40, Stephanie O’Keefe placed 84th in 24:29.31 and Laura Wilcox finished 90th in 24:49.36. Abby Guthrie was 97th in 24:57.60, Victoria Swartz placed 98th in 25:02.44 and Amanda Snow was 111th in 25:43.93 as Southington finished fifth out of seven teams in CCC West scoring.

Wednesday, Oct. 19 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, RHAM 0

Danielle Kaminsky had 33 assists and Tori Broytman had 19 kills as Southington posted the 25-18, 25-13, 25-23 win at home. Sara Malicka had 16 digs, Emily Durocher had eight kills, Corinne Horanzy had 10 kills and Sam Vitale added four aces for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, Oct. 18 – Girls Swimming
Farmington 96, Southington 85

Haley Marquardt won the 200 freestyle in 2:09.80 and the 500 freestyle in 5:49.89 for Southington in the loss at Farmington.

Laurel Dean won the 200 IM in 2:27.55 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.21, while Amanda Mirando was first in diving with 165.80 points. Cecely Ogren, Elizabeth Ogren, Alyssa Aligata and Allison Hammersley won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:12.19.

Tuesday, Oct. 18 – Girls Soccer
Southington 2, Northwest Catholic 2 (OT)

Sarah Palko scored with two minutes left in the first overtime to give Southington a 2-1 lead before unbeaten Northwest scored in the second extra session to forge a tie in West Hartford.

Erica Kosienski scored in the first half to give Southington a 1-0 lead. Sarah Caisse and Megan McLaughlin combined for nine saves for the Blue Knights, who closed out the week with a 3-0 loss at Farmington on Friday.

Tuesday, Oct. 18 – Boys Soccer
Southington 1, Northwest Catholic 0

J.P. Ricciardone scored from 27 yards with 14:50 left in the game as Southington won in West Hartford. It was the third shutout of the season for Blue Knights’ goalkeeper Bill Queen.

Monday, Oct. 17 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Northwest Catholic 1

Tori Broytman had 22 kills and Corinne Horanzy added 11 kills and six aces as the Blue Knights posted the 21-25, 25-14, 25-12, 25-14 victory in West Hartford.

Kayla Padroff had 16 digs and Danielle Kaminsky added 36 assists for Southington.

Monday, Oct. 17 – Boys Soccer
Conard 2, Southington 0

Bill Queen had five saves for Southington in the home loss to the Chieftains.

Monday, Oct. 17 – Field Hockey
South Windsor 4, Southington 3 (OT)

Sarah Collier scored twice for the Blue Knights in the loss to the Bobcats in Southington. Casey Sullivan had a goal and Susie Marcoux nine saves for the Blue Knights.
