SHS Sports Wrap

A look at the past games this week for Southington High School and beyond.

For the first time in a month, Southington High sports teams experienced a week without school interruptions due to weather. With the postseason closing in, here is a look back at recent Blue Knights' action.

Saturday, Feb. 5 - Boys Hockey
Rocky Hill/RHAM/Middletown 5, Hall-Southington 4 @ Cromwell

A five-goal second period was the difference for the Rocky Hill co-op in the victory over the Warrior Knights at Champions Rink. Kevin SanAngelo, Nick Mastroianni, Chris Anderson and Sam Sloan scored, while John Gradante and Jefferson Moore combined for 34 saves for Hall-Southington.

Tuesday, Feb. 8 - Boys Basketball
Northwest Catholic-West Hartford 62, Southington 42 @ Southington

The first time the two CCC West teams, the undefeated Indians needed a last-second shot to defeat Southington. This time, a 15-0 run in the third quarter was the key to Northwest's 20-point victory. Tyler Dube had 14 points and Sal Romano added 13 for the Blue Knights as their seven-game winning streak came to an end.

Tuesday, Feb. 8 - Girls Basketball
Southington 28, Northwest Catholic 27 @ Northwest Catholic

Meg McLaughlin's free throw with five seconds to play was the difference for the Blue Knights in the CCC West game in West Hartford. Tori Munson scored 17 points for Southington, including a basket off a pass from Emily Durocher to tie the game at 27-all with less than 30 seconds remaining.

Wednesday, Feb. 9 – Wrestling
Southington 51, New Britain 19 @ New Britain

Southington ended the regular season with a victory that clinched the CCC West title. Tom Gallagher (125 pounds) won by pin for the Blue Knights, as did Noah Sheffy (135), Tyler Hyde (145), Travis Daly (285), Tyler Mirando (103) and Nate Solomon (119).  Ryan Dupuis (130) won, 16-1, while Zach Maxwell (171) posted a 13-2 decision. Don Rinaldi (152) and Brandon Lariviere (160) also picked up wins for the Blue Knights.

Monday, February 7 – Skiing

Austin Florian, Jamie Abraham and Sebastian Doughty qualified for next week's Slalom Shootout with top-30 finishes at the Team Connecticut qualifying race. A total of 53 girls and 59 boys competed in the first of two state races for the state's all-star team, which will compete against other New England states later this season. Florian (47.38 seconds) placed four for the boys, while Doughty (49.03 seconds) finished 25th. Abraham (49.66 seconds) was 25th in the girls event. Christa Case also competed for the Southington girls team, finishing in 47th place with a time of 52.29 seconds.
