SHS Sports Wrap

A look back at the week in sports for the Southington Blue Knights.

School might be closed for winter vacation, but Southington High teams kept busy with action in both the regular season and post season this week.

Friday-Saturday, February 18-19 – Wrestling
Class LL Championships @ Trumbull

Led by Tyler Mirando's fifth-place finish at 103 pounds, Southington finished in 18th place with 50.5 points. Mirando finished 4-2 and earned a spot in the State Open as an alternate. Freshman Zach Maxwell (171) posted a 3-2 record, while Nate Solomon (119) and Travis Daly (285) each went 2-2 for Southington. Kyle Connolly (130), Noah Sheffy (135), Mark Jaffer (140) and Don Rinaldi (152) all posted 1-2 records for the Blue Knights.

Saturday, February 19 - Indoor Track
State Open @ New Haven Athletic Center

Junior Cherraine Davis put the shot 44 feet, 1 1/2 inches to win the event by almost six feet. Davis will next compete in the New England Championships, which is slated for March 4 in Boston. Southington finished in a tie for 11th place with 10 points. Rhiannon Jacobs finished 10th in the pole vault with an effort of nine feet, six inches. Tim Brown was the lone competitor for the Southington boys, finishing ninth in the 1,000 with a time of 2:35.97.

Tuesday, February 22 - Boys Basketball
Southington 80, New Britain 69 @ New Britain

Tyler Dube scored 25 points and Sal Romano added 21 as Southington closed out the regular season at 14-6 overall and 10-4 in the CCC West. Alex Borofsky scored 15 points and Jordan Chapman added 12 for the Blue Knights.

Thursday, February 24 - Boys Basketball
Southington 65, Manchester 61 @ Southington

Jordan Chapman scored 19 points as No. 6 Southington defeated No. 11 Manchester in a CCC first-round tournament game. Sal Romano had 21 points and 16 rebounds, while Tyler Dube had 18 points, four assists and four steals for Southington.

Saturday, February 19 - Boys Hockey
Cheshire 5, Hall/Southington 2 @ Middletown

Kevin SanAngelo and Nick Mastroianni scored, while John Gradante had 45 saves for the Warrior Knights in the loss to Cheshire at Wesleyan University.

Monday, February 21 - Boys Hockey
East Catholic-Manchester 4, Hall/Southington 3 (OT) @ West Hartford

East Catholic scored the game-winner with 4:50 left in overtime. Trey Lerner had a pair of goals and Nick Mastroianni added a score for Hall/Southington. John Gradnate had 36 saves for the Warrior Knights.
