SHS Sports Wrap

A look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.

The winter sports teams had their first full week of action following the winter break. The wrestling team fell from the unbeaten ranks but continued to impress, while the boys swimming team remained undefeated.

Saturday, Jan. 7 – Wrestling
Westside Duals @ West Springfield, Mass.

Southington (11-1) placed fourth in the event, winning three of four matches.

The Blue Knights lost to Franklin, Mass., 34-31, but picked up wins against Springfield Central (34-30), Averil Park., N.Y. (52-18) and Lincoln-Sudbury, Mass., 37-29.

Saturday, Jan. 7 – Hockey
Suffield 4, Hall/Southington 1 @ Enfield

Suffield scored three goals in the third period to break a 1-1 tie as the Warrior Knights fell to 1-3-1.

Owen Kantor scored for Hall/Southington with assists from Justin Rose and Trey Lerner. John Gradante had 27 saves in net for the Warrior Knights.

Thursday, Jan. 5 – Boys Basketball
Northwest Catholic 70, Southington 41 @ Southington

Shane Cooper had a team-high 14 points and Ted Shaw added 11 in the Blue Knights’ home loss to the undefeated Indians.

It was the fifth consecutive loss for Southington (1-6).

Thursday, Jan. 5 – Girls Basketball
Northwest Catholic 46, Southington 43 @ West Hartford

Danielle Charamut scored 19 points in Southington’s road loss that dropped the Blue Knights’ record to 4-5.

Wednesday,  Jan. 4 – Gymnastics
Southington 135.65, Farmington 130.5 @ CATS, Cheshire

The Blue Knights opened the season with a home win as Kayla Nati won the beam (9.0) and bars (8.2) for Southington. Nati was fourth in floor exercises (8.45) and fifth in the vault (8.5) to finish third in the all-around with 34.05 points.

Lexi Rothstein tied teammate Toni Penta (9.0) for second on vault, placed second on floor (8.6), third on beam (8.65) and tied teammate Sarah Leahy for second (8.1) on bars to place second all-around at 34.35.

Leahy was seventh on vault (8.15), tied for fifth on floor (8.4) and tied for sixth on beam (7.7) to place sixth in the all-around at 32.35 points. Lindsey Socquet was fourth on vault (8.7), sixth on floor (8.3), fifth on beam (8.35) and fourth on bars (7.5) to place fourth all-around at 32.85.

Penta tied for third on floor (8.5), while Amanda Mirando was sixth (8.2) on vault and second on beam (8.7) for Southington.

Wednesday, Jan. 4 – Wrestling
Southington 61, Hall 7 @ West Hartford

Nate Solomon (126 pounds), Noah Sheffy (132), Alex Martin (152), Zach Maxwell (182) and Austin Sullivan (195) had pins for Southington.

Mark Jaffer (145) and Brandon Lariviere (170) won by technical fall, while Zach Bylykbashi (120), Ryan Dupuis (138), Tyler Hyde (160) and Travis Daly (285) had technical fall victories for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, Jan. 3 – Boys Basketball
Conard 44, Southington 37 @ West Hartford

Alex Borofsky had a game-high 14 points for Southington in the road loss.

Tuesday, Jan. 3 – Girls Basketball
Southington 27, Conard 17 @ Southington

Danielle Charamut scored 10 points for the Blue Knights in the home victory. Southington held Conard to two points in the fourth quarter.

Tuesday, Jan. 3 – Boys Swimming
Southington 102, Maloney/Platt co-op 82 @ Platt

Southington moved to 2-0 with the road win as Mark Golos, Jesse Cooney and Mike Smigelski won individual events.

Golos won the 200 freestyle in 2:12, Cooney was first in the 100 backstroke (1:03.04) and Smigelski won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.32.

Cooney teamed with Smigelski, Vlad Kiveliyk and Dylan Figueiredo to win the 200 medley relay (1:54.03). Cooney, Bryan Adie, Joe Taglia and Adam Sokolowski won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:58.75.
