SHS Sports Wrap

A look back at this week in sports for Southington High School.

Three weeks into the fall sports season, the football and girls volleyball teams remain undefeated.

Football – Saturday, Oct. 1

Southington 13, Newington 6

The defense again picked up for a sluggish offense, keeping Newington off the scoreboard until three minutes remained as visiting Southington moved to 3-0.

Quarterback Stephen Barmore rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, including an 80-yard scoring run for the only points of the first half. Matt O’Connor (4 carries, 56 yards) added a 24-yard TD run for Southington.

Jarrid Grimmett ran for 64 yards on 12 carries and Brian Kaminsky and Corbin Garry had interceptions for Southington.

Friday, Sept. 30 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Simsbury 0

Corinne Horanzy had 12 kills and four aces as the Blue Knights moved to 7-0 with the 25-14, 25-19, 25-20 win at home. Allison McCormick had eight digs and four aces for Southington.

Friday, Sept. 30 – Girls Swimming
Southington 89, Manchester 81

Melanie Mongillo won the 50 freestyle in 26.71 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 1:01.07 as Southington won at home. Haley Marquardt won the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle in 5:57.14 for the Blue Knights.

Sarah Krzesik took first in the 100 butterfly in 1:09.26. The foursome of Marquardt, Kreszik, Molly Potter and Mongillo won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:15.14, while Laurel Dean, Alyson Baribault, Joy Blanchet and Mongillo took the 200 freestyle relay in 1:53.20.

Friday, Sept. 30 – Field Hockey
Conard 2, Southington 0

Susie Marcoux had 10 saves for Southington in the home loss to the Chieftains.

Friday, Sept. 30 – Girls Soccer
Southington 4, Simsbury 0


Sarah Palko scored twice for the Blue Knights in the home victory. Erica Kosienski and Nicole Wershoven also scored for Southington and goalies Megan McLaughlin and Sarah Caisse combined for three saves.

Friday, Sept. 30 – Boys Soccer
Simsbury 4, Southington 0

Bill Queen had nine saves for Southington in the loss to the Trojans in Simsbury.

Wednesday, Sept. 28 – Girls Soccer
Farmington 2, Southington 1

Erica Kosienski had the only goal for Southington in the home loss to the Indians. Sarah Caisse and Megan McLaughlin combined for eight saves in goal for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, Sept. 27 – Boys Cross Country
Southington 26, Northwest Catholic 33
Conard 25, Southington 35

Kyle Hamel finished second in 16:56 as the Blue Knights split the meet at Southington’s Camp Sloper.

Nick Garcia was fifth in 17:48, Damiaen Florian was ninth in 18:27, Joe Pappalardo (18:47) was 14th and Miles Groom (18:52) placed 15th for Southington.

Tuesday, Sept. 27 – Girls Cross Country
Conard 25, Southington 35

Northwest Catholic 22, Southington 33

Hannah Chamis led Southington at Camp Sloper with an eighth-place finish in 23:07. Stephanie O’Keefe (23:19) was ninth, Julia Reilly (23:29) finished 11th, Amanda Hamel (23:38) was 12th and Mel Reid (23:51) placed 13th for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, Sept 27 – Girls Swimming
Woodland 98, Southington 78

Laurel Dean won the IM in 2:26.16 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.93 in Southington’s non-conference loss to the Hawks in Beacon Falls.

Sarah Krzesik won the backstroke in 1:14.34, followed by teammate Molly Potter in 1:14.51. The quartet of Dean, Aly Bariabult, Haley Marquardt and Melanie Mongillo won the 200 freestyle relay.

Tuesday, Sept. 27 – Boys Soccer
Hall 6, Southington 0

Bill Queen made 15 saves, but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors rolled to the victory in Southington.

Tuesday, Sept. 27 – Girls Soccer
Hall 1, Southington 0

A goal by Hayley Mullins 15 minutes into the first half was enough as the Warriors won in West Hartford. Sarah Caisse and Megan McLaughlin combined for three saves in goal for Southington.

Monday, Sept. 26 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Hall 0

Corinne Horanzy had seven kills and Samantha Vitale added eight aces for the Blue Knights in the 25-6, 25-6, 25-2 victory. Kaylee Kolodziejczyk had four kills for Southington in the home victory.

Monday, Sept. 26 – Field Hockey
Simsbury 6, Southington 2

Sarah Collier and Rachel Dorsey scored in the loss to the host Trojans. Casey Sullivan and Kristen Brandien had assists and Susie Marcoux had 13 saves for Southington.
