SHS Sports Wrap

A look back at this week in sports for Southington High School.

The week saw the volleyball team drop its first match of the season while the football team improved to 4-1 despite having its starting quarterback on the sidelines.

Friday, Oct. 14 – Football
Southington 34, South Windsor 0

With sophomore Stephen Barmore (shoulder) on the sidelines, senior Matt O’Connor rushed for 191 yards and two TDs in Southington’s home victory.

Senior Andrew Walowski completed 9 of 18 passes for 96 yards and two TDs. The Blue Knights held South Windsor to only 101 yards of total offense.

Friday, Oct. 14 – Girls Soccer
Conard 2, Southington 0

Megan McLaughlin and Sarah Caisse combined for eight saves as Conard shutout Southington in West Hartford.

Friday, Oct. 14 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Bristol Eastern 0

Danielle Kaminsky had 29 assists and eight digs as the Blue Knights cruised to the 25-18, 25-15, 27-25 win in Bristol. Corinne Horanzy had 15 kills and 15 digs, while Tori Broytman added 14 kills and 12 digs for Southington.

Friday, Oct. 14 – Girls Swimming
Southington 95, Enfield/Somers/Fermi 67

Melanie Mongillo and Haley Marquardt each won two events as Southington posted the victory in Enfield. Mongillo was first in the 50-meter freestyle (27.14 seconds) and 100-meter freestyle (1:01.67). Marquardt won the 200-meter freestyle (2:14.17) and 500-meter freestyle (5:54.39).

Mongillo, Joy Blanchet, Bailey Potter and Jenny Drozd won the 200-meter freestyle relay in 1:57.53. Potter, Laurel Dean, Sarah Krzesik and Emily Ferens won the 200-meter medley relay in 2:10.53.

Thursday, Oct. 13 – Field Hockey
Southington 3, Lyman Hall 0

Rachel Dorsey scored two goals as Southington defeated Lyman Hall at home. Casey Sullivan had a goal and Susie Marcoux five saves for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, Oct. 12 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Conard 0

Jordyn Moquin had five kills and Kaylee Kolodziejczyk added four for the Blue Knights in the easy 25-3, 25-12, 25-15 win at home. Sam Vitale added six aces as Southington rebounded from its first loss of the season.

Wednesday, Oct. 12 – Boys Cross Country
Southington 19, New Britain 44

The Blue Knights wrapped up the regular season 4-3 overall and in the CCC West with the victory over the Hurricanes at Southington’s Camp Sloper. Nick Garcia was first for Southington in 17:33, Finn Gordon (18:04) and Jordan Gray (18:22) fourth for the Blue Knights.

Joe Pappalardo (18:27) was fifth, followed by Southington teammates Jacob Harton (18:28), Ben Gibbons (18:41) and Damiaen Florian (18:42).

Wednesday, Oct. 12 – Girls Cross Country
Southington 15, New Britain 50

The Blue Knights finished 2-6 overall and 2-5 in the CCC West with the victory. New Britain had only two runners complete in the meet. Southington’s Stephanie O’Keefe was second (21:49) and Hannah Chamis (22:01) was fourth.

The Blue Knights’ Amanda Hamel (22:27) was fifth, followed by teammates Megan Albert (22:54), Eileen Germain (23:01), Melissa Reid (23:17) and Laura Wilcox (23:19).

Wednesday, Oct. 12 – Girls Swimming
Hall 82, Southington 80

Haley Marquardt won the 500-meter freestyle in 5:49.56 in Southington’s loss to the Warriors at the Southington YMCA. Sarah Krzesik won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:15.47 and Ally Baribault took first in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:16.92.

The quartet of Marquardt, Jenny Drozd, Laurel Dean and Melanie Mongillo won the 400-meter freestyle relay in 4:14.

Tuesday, Oct. 11 – Girls Volleyball
Coventry 3, Southington 0

Tori Broytman had 11 kills and Corinne Horanzy had eight for the Blue Knights in the 25-17, 25-22, 25-28 non-conference home loss. Danielle Kominsky had 20 assists and Horanzy had 15 digs for Southington.

Tuesday, Oct. 11 – Field Hockey
E.O. Smith 2, Southington 1

Kristen Brandien scored for the Blue Knights in the loss to the Panthers in Storrs. Susie Marcoux had five saves for Southington.

Tuesday, Oct. 11 – Boys Soccer
Southington 2, Newington 0

Steve DePonte and J.P. Ricciardone scored first-half goals for Southington in the victory at Newington. Bill Queen was spectactular in goal for the Blue Knights, finishing a busy day with nine saves.

Tuesday, Oct. 11 – Girls Soccer
Southington 4, Newington 0

Erica Kosienski scored twice for the Blue Knights in the home victory. Sam Bottaro and Nicole Wershoven also scored and Sarah Caisse and Megan McLaughlin combined for four saves.
