SHS Girls' Tennis, Boys' Track Teams Stay Unbeaten

Take a look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.

The spring sports season is heating up at Southington High. The girls' tennis and boys' track teams remained unbeaten, while the softball, boys' volleyball and boys' tennis squads each lost for the first time.

Saturday, Apr. 21 – Boys' Lacrosse

The Blue Knights lost their fourth straight, falling to 1-5 with the non-conference defeat in Southbury.

Southington 3, Xavier 0 @ Xavier

Dan Carbone had 12 kills and three aces for Southington (6-1) in the 25-21, 25-12, 25-16 victory in Middletown.

Thursday, Apr. 19 – Golf

Northwest Catholic 150, Southington 174 @ Hawks Landing

Brandon Wheeler was the low scorer at 42 for Southington (0-3) in the home loss to the Indians. Tom Fischer (43), Dave Valentukonis (44) and Eric Flood (45) also scored for the Blue Knights.

Thursday, Apr. 19 – Baseball

Gilbert 16, Southington 11 @ Southington

Ben Nichols went 4-for-4 with a three-run homer and RBI double, but it wasn’t enough to stop Southington (3-4) from losing its third straight game in four days.

Matt Sirois went 3-for-4, Matt DiNello went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored and Jordan Gray went 2-for-4 for the Blue Knights. Junior Nichols went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored for Southington.

Wednesday, Apr. 18 – Softball

Southington 6, Conard 3 @ Southington

Sarah Carangelo went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Blue Knights (6-1) bounced back from their first defeat.

Jordyn Moquin pitched a four-hitter for Southington, striking out three.

Wednesday, Apr. 18 – Baseball

Conard 4, Southington 1 @ Conard

Ben Nichols and Matt DiNello each tripled for the Blue Knights in the CCC West loss in West Hartford. DiNello scored Southington’s only run on a groundout in the seventh.

Justin Robarge struck out 10 for the Blue Knights, allowing
six hits and three walks.

Wednesday, Apr. 18 – Girls' Tennis

Southington 6, Middletown 1 @ Southington

The Blue Knights (3-0) swept the doubles matches to win the CCC interdivisional match.

Andrea Rasimas and Annette Kaminski won, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1. Jess Topper and Susan Murphy teamed for a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2, while the No. 3 duo of Taylor Grucza and Cassidy Race were 6-1, 6-1 winners.

In singles, Alejandra Gimenez pulled out a 6-4, 6-7, 6-0 win at No. 1. Courtney Race won at 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 and No. 4 Alex Barmore was a 6-0, 7-6 winner.

Wednesday, Apr. 18 – Boys' Lacrosse

Fairfield Ludlowe 8, Southington 2 @ Southington

Kevin Cop and Tom Gallagher each scored for the Blue Knights in the non-conference loss.

Billy Thomson had 23 saves in goal for Southington.

Wednesday, Apr. 18 – Girls' Lacrosse

Southington 16, McMahon 8 @ Southington

Sarah Pelligrinelli had five goals and an assist for Southington (3-1-1) in the non-conference win.

Carolynn Keal had four goals and two assists, while Jordan Crowley had two goals and three assists for the Blue Knights. Jess Lee had two goals and an assist and Laurel Dean had a goal and two assists for Southington.

Alexa Luponio and Taylor Hilliard each had a goal and Ali Abacherli had 12 saves for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, Apr. 18 – Boys' Volleyball

Staples 3, Southington 0 @ Staples

Staples won the matchup of undefeated teams, sweeping the Blue Knights in Westport. Game scores were 25-15, 25-23, 25-22.

Tuesday, Apr. 17 – Girls' Tennis

Southington 7, Rocky Hill 0 @ Rocky Hill

Alejandra Gimenez won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 to lead Southington to the road win. Courtney Race (No. 2, 6-1, 6-0), Caroline Rodman (No. 3, 6-4, 6-1) and Alex Rodman (No. 4, 6-0, 6-2) also picked up singles wins for the Blue Knights.

Manchester 5, Southington 2 @ Southington

Kevin Wormer and Gary Beaumont won, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles for Southington (2-1) in the home loss.

Nate Mullins and Luke Pfanzelt won, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, Apr. 17 – Golf

Newington 169, Southington 171 @ Hawks Landing

Eric Flood led the Blue Knights with a 41 in the CCC West match in Southington.

Tom Fischer and Dave Valentkonis each shot a 43 and Jared DeGumbia had a 44 for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, Apr. 17 – Boys' Track

Southington 80, Newington 62 @ Southington

Kyle Summa (400), Kyle Hamel (1,600) and Nick Garcia (3,200) picked up wins on the track for Southington (3-0).

The 4x100 team of Stephen Barmore, Zach Maxwell, Nate Bonefont and Anthony Bonefont won in 46.50 seconds. Nate Bonefont won the long jump, Barmore was first in the 100 and the Blue Knights also won the 4x800 in 8:53.

Tuesday, Apr. 17 – Girls' Track

Southington 100, Newington 49 @ Southington

Erica Kosienski won the 100 and 200 and Katie Wendt was first in the 100 hurdles as the Blue Knights (2-1) won at home.

Southington was first in the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Cherraine Davis won the shot put (40-7) and discus (114-0), Nicole Wershoven won the triple jump (29-3) and Cyndy Woolley (1:03.9) was first in the 400.

Monday, Apr. 16 – Softball

Rocky Hill 2, Southington 1 (8) @ Southington

Erin Weber’s RBI single with two out in the top of the eighth inning was the difference as Southington dropped the CCC interdivisional game.

Sydney Ferrante had an RBI double for the Blue Knights. Jordyn Moquin allowed four hits and one walk, striking out six. Nicole Rossitto had two walks and two of Southington’s eight hits.

Monday, Apr. 16 – Baseball

RHAM 1, Southington 0 @ Southington

RHAM’s Baylor LaPointe pitched a two-hitter and had an RBI double in the first as the Blue Knights dropped the CCC interdivisional game.

Ben Nichols and Dave Palladino each singled for Southington. Craig Frobel pitched a five-hitter for the Blue Knights, walking two while striking out nine.

Monday, Apr. 16 – Boys' Volleyball

Southington 3, Shelton 0 @ Southington

Nick Powell had nine kills, three digs and six aces for the Blue Knights in the 25-21, 25-7, 25-13 win.

Jeff Kolb had nine kills, while Chris Sherwill had five kills, three aces and five digs for Southington. Alex Zajda had 34 assists and five digs and Peter DelBuono had nine digs for the Blue Knights.
