SHS Sports Wrap

A look back at this week in sports for Southington High School.

The 2011 fall season kicked off this week for sports teams. For the most part, it was a successful start with the school’s teams taking several wins in the first week.

Friday, Sept. 16 – Football
Southington 42, East Hartford 14

Sophomore Stephen Barmore completed 14 of 20 passes for 201 passes for two touchdowns, one each to Brian Kaminsky (23 yards) and Andrew Walowski (15 yards). Barmore also added a 38-yard TD run. Sophomore Jarrid Grimmett ran for 77 yards and touchdowns on 12 carries and Dave Dineno added an 11-yard TD run for Southington’s final points in the third quarter.

Friday, Sept. 16 – Boys Soccer
Southington 2, Newington 1 (2 OT)

Jared DeFeo scored off an assist from Nick Powell with 2:42 left in the second overtime as Southington opened its season with the home victory. J.P. Ricciardone scored with seven minutes left in the first half to tie the score for Southington. Bill Queen had six saves for the Blue Knights.

Friday, Sept. 16 – Girls Soccer
Southington 6, Newington 1

Erica Kosienski scored three goals as Southington rolled to the victory in Newington. Nicole Wershoven, Christie Freer and Sarah Palko also scored for the Blue Knights. Sarah Caisse and Megan McLaughlin combined for four saves in the Southington net.

Friday, Sept. 16 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Conard 0

Tory Broytman and Corinne Horanzy combined for 16 kills and Danielle Kaminsky had six aces and 15 assists as Southington rolled to the 25-12, 25-5, 25-14 win in West Hartford. Cyndy Woolley had five aces for Southington.

Thursday, Sept. 15 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Bunnell 1

Danielle Kaminsky had 35 assists and 10 digs as the Blue Knights won the non-conference match-up in Stratford. Tory Broytman had 20 kills in the 25-14, 18-25, 25-23, 25-15 victory. Corinne Horanzy had 13 kills and Allison McCormick added five aces for Southington.

Tuesday, Sept. 13 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Newington 0
The Blue Knights opened the season at home with a 25-10, 25-19, 25-14 victory over the Indians. Danielle Kaminsky had 25 assists, Tory Broytman 11 kills and Corinne Horanzy eight kills for Southington.

Tuesday, Sept. 13 – Field Hockey
Southington 5, Northwest Catholic 1
Sarah Collier scored three goals and Kristen Brandien added two as Southington opened the season with the home victory. Casey Sullivan had an assist and Suzi Marcoux had four saves for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, Sept. 13 – Girls Soccer
Southington 1, Rockville 0

Erica Kosienski scored four minutes into the game and the Blue Knights hung on for the season-opening win in Vernon. Sarah Caisse had one save as Southington had a 26-2 advantage in shots.

Tuesday, Sept. 13 - Boys Cross Country
Hall 24, Southington 35
Southington 22, Farmington 36

The Blue Knights went 1-1 in their opening meet of the season. Southington's Kyle Hamel finished first overall with a time of 17:33 over the 3.1-mile course in West Hartford.

Tuesday, Sept. 13 - Girls Cross Country
Farmington 22, Southington 35
Hall 18, Southington 42

The Blue Knights fell to 0-2 with the opening dual-meet loss in West Hartford.
