SHS Sports Wrap - Hockey Takes Playoff Loss

A look back at the end of the winter season as SHS Sports Wrap closes out the hockey season and more at Southington High School.

The winter season is coming to an end. With the departure of the boys’ hockey team from the state tournament, the only athletes left competing are members of the boys’ swimming team.

Saturday/Sunday – March 10/11 – SkiingEastern High School Championships

Brian Chambers finished two runs in 1:56.20 to finish ninth in the giant slalom event at the two-day competition at Attitash in Bartlett, N.H. Chambers placed 11th in the slalom on the opening day, finishing two runs in 1:40.62.

Bob Chambers, who didn’t complete the second run in slalom, placed 20th in the giant slalom with a combined time of 1:58.11.


Austin Florian competed Sunday at the FIS Eastern Junior Finals at Whiteface in Wilmington, N.Y., and placed 12th in slalom with a time of 1:30.85.

Friday/Saturday, March 9-10 – Cheerleading
State Championships @ New Haven

Competing at the Floyd Little Athletic Center, the Blue Knights finished fourth out of 15 teams in the co-ed division with a score of 118.

It was the first time Southington has competed as a co-ed team in state competition. It was also the Blue Knights’ highest finish at the state level by any squad in school history.

Saturday, March 10 – Boys Swimming
Class LL qualifying @ Hamden

Mike Smigelski had a pair of second-place freestyle finishes to lead the Blue Knights into Wednesday’s Class LL championships at Wesleyan.

Smigelski finished the 50 in 21.76 seconds and the 100 in 47.89 seconds. The foursome of Jesse Cooney, Bryan Adie, Vlad Kiveliyk and Smigelski was sixth in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.23. The same quartet finished seventh in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:24.76.

The 200 medley relay team of Dylan Figueiredo, Matt Duszak, Adam Sokolowski and Joe Taglia was 14th in 1:52.12. In the 200 IM, Cooney (2:07.38) placed 22nd and Adie (2:14.80) was 29th.

Kiveliyk was 15th in the 100 butterfly (56.55 seconds) and 28th in the 500 freestyle (5:15.53). Duszak was 24th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.65, one spot ahead of Cooney in 1:06.97.

Monday, March 5 – Hockey
CIAC Division III tournament

Jim Nardi and Chris Anderson scored for No. 9 Hall/Southington (8-13-1) in a 4-2 loss to No. 8 Rockville/Manchester/Stafford in a first-round game at the Bolton Ice Palace.

Sam Sloan, Owen Kantor, Cody Backus and Dylan Roach each had an assist and John Gradante had 36 saves for the Warrior Knights.

Saturday, March 3 – Gymnastics
State Open @ New Milford

Toni Penta led Southington, tying for 12th place on floor with a score of 9.1. Penta was also 26th on vault with a score of 8.5.

Kayla Nati was 20th on vault (8.775), tied for 17th on bars (8.6) and tied for 21st on floor (8.7). Lexi Rothstein was 32nd on vault (7.9), tied for 28th on beam (7.75) and tied for 14th on floor (9.0).
