SHS Sports Wrap: Holiday Week Results

A look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.

 

There might not have been any classes scheduled, but only two Southington High winter sports teams were idle during the holiday break.

Friday, Dec. 30 – Wrestling

SHS Duals @ Southington

The Blue Knights continued their winning ways, defeating four opponents to win the 10-team event at home. Southington defeated East Hartford, Ridgefield and Pine Bush (N.Y.) before defeating former CCC South rival Bristol Central, 33-28, in the championship match.

Nate Solomon (126 pounds), Ryan Dupuis (138), Mark Jaffer (145) and Zach Maxwell (182) went undefeated for Southington. Pins by Alex Richardson (113) and Dupuis helped the Blue Knights in the final along with a decision victory by Jaffer (145).

Wednesday, Dec. 28 – Girls Basketball

Suffield 66, Southington 48 @ Suffield

Megan McLaughlin led Southington (3-4) with 18 points, including four 3-pointers, in the non-conference loss. Danielle Charamut added 14 points for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, Dec. 28 – Boys Basketball

Cheshire 72, Southington 51 @ Cheshire

Led by 6-foot-10 center Alex Howard’s 18 points, Cheshire dropped the Blue Knights’ record to 1-4.

Alex Borofsky scored a game-high 20 points for Southington.

Wednesday, Dec. 28 – Indoor Track

Bacon Academy Meet @ New Haven Athletic Center

Rhiannon Jacobs had the top finish for the Southington teams, finishing second in the girls’ pole vault with an effort of 8 feet, 6 inches. Ben Gibbons had a third-place finish for the Southington boys in the 400 with a time of 56.77 seconds.

Kyle Hamel was fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:09.57, Joe Pappalardo was sixth in the 800 (2:16.04) and Kyle Summa placed 11th in the 600 (1:33.37). Steve Boyington was 12th in the long jump at 17 feet, 9½ inches and Nick Garcia was 15th in the 3,200 (10:49.83).

Damiaen Florian was 18th in the 1,000 (2:54.97) and 19th in the
1,600 (4:54.96) for the Blue Knights.

Cyndy Woolley was fourth in the long jump (14-2¼) and 17th in the 300 (47.76 seconds) for Southington. Rebecca Pappalardo finished 20th in the 800 (2:58.83) and 19th in the 400 (1:16.40).

Audrey Snyder tied for eighth in the pole vault (7-6), Raquel Romano was 15th in the 800 (2:51.04), Katie Wendt placed 18th in the 55 hurdles (11.02 seconds) and Katherine Mellitt was 18th in the 1,600 (6:07.29).

Sarah Carangelo was 17th in the long jump (12-1) and Hayley Arduini was 20th (12-¼). Katie Baldwin was 19th in the shot put (25 feet).

Tuesday, Dec. 27 – Wrestling

Danbury Invitational

Zach Maxwell (182 pounds) finished first as the Blue Knights placed fourth overall in a meet featuring many of the state’s best teams.

Tyler Mirando (106) finished in second place. Austin Sullivan (195) and Travis Daly (285) each finished fourth, Nate Solomon (126) placed fifth and Connor Morrell (220) and Zach Bylykbashi (113) added sixth-place efforts for Southington.

Monday, Dec. 26 – Hockey

BCL 3, Hall/Southington 1 @ West Hartford

Owen Kantor had the only goal for the Warrior Knights (1-2-1) in the home loss to Bolton/Coventry/Lyman Memorial. Justin Rose and Will Thompson had assists, while Jeff Moore had 18 saves for Hall/Southington.
