SHS Sports Wrap: Mid-Season Results
A look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.
As the winter season rolls toward the end of January, sports teams continue their efforts to qualify for CIAC postseason competition.
Friday/Saturday, Jan. 13/14 – Wrestling
Greater Hartford Invitational @ Hall HS, West Hartford
The Blue Knights kept rolling along, using eight top-four finishes to outlast 14 other teams at the two-day event. Southington totaled 207 points, 31½ ahead of runner-up Newington.
Tyler Mirando (106 pounds) finished first, while Zach Bylykbashi (113), Nate Solomon (126) and Travis Daly (285) were second in their weight classes. Mark Jaffer (145) placed third and Alex Richardson (120), Ryan Dupuis (138) and Connor Morrell (195) all finished fourth.
Zach Maxwell (182), Tyler Hyde (160) and Austin Sullivan (220) placed fifth, while Noah Sheffy (132) finished sixth.
Saturday, Jan. 14 – Indoor Track
SCC Coaches Invitational @ Floyd Little Athletic Center, New Haven
Cherraine Davis led Southington competitors with a first-place effort in the shot put at 41 feet, 2¼ inches.
Rhiannon Jacobs was 16th in the pole vault (8-6), Cyndy Woolley was 18th in the long jump (15-3) and Erica Kosienski was 12th in the 55 meters with a time of 7.8 seconds.
Steve Boyington was 20th for the Southington boys in the long jump (18-7¾).
Saturday, Jan. 14 – Hockey
Hall/Southington 3, Wethersfield 1 @ Newington
Kevin Cop, Will Thompson and Dave Valentukonis scored as the Warrior Knights (3-4-1) picked up the road victory.
Sam Sloan and Jim Nardi had assists and John Gradante had 27 saves for Hall/Southington.
Thursday, Jan. 12 – Girls Basketball
Hall 31, Southington 30 @ Southington
Moira Honyotski’s jumper with eight seconds left was the difference as the Blue Knights (5-6) dropped a heartbreaker at home.
Stephanie O’Keefe led Southington with 11 points.
Thursday, Jan. 12 – Boys Basketball
Hall 48, Southington 45 @ West Hartford
Alex Borofsky had a game-high 24 points, but it wasn’t enough as Southington (1-8) dropped its sixth consecutive game.
Wednesday, Jan. 11 – Hockey
North Branford 6, Hall/Southington 4 @ Veterans, West Hartford
Jesse Patterson, Sam Sloan, Owen Kantor and Chris Anderson scored for the Warrior Knights in the home loss.
Anderson, Sloan, Trey Lerner, Brian Mahon and Cody Backus each had assists and Jeff Moore had 29 saves for Hall/Southington.
Wednesday, Jan. 11 – Wrestling
Southington 48, Simsbury 16 @ Simsbury
Nate Solomon (126), Ryan Dupuis (138), Mark Jaffer (145), Brandon Lariviere (170), Austin Sullivan (195) and Travis Daly (285) had pins for Southington (12-1) in the road win.
Tyler Mirando (106), Zach Bylykbashi (120), Noah Sheffy (132), Tyler Hyde (160) and Zach Maxwell (182) added victories by decision for the Blue Knights.
Monday, Jan. 9 – Girls Basketball
Southington 38, Farmington 26 @ Farmington
Maeghan Chapman had 15 points and Danielle Charamut added 10 for the Blue Knights in the road victory.
Monday, Jan. 9 – Boys Basketball
Farmington 55, Southington 37 @ Southington
Alex Borofsky had a game-high 20 points for Southington in the home loss to the Indians.
