SHS Sports Wrap: Wrestlers Upset Farmington

A look back at this week in sports at Southington High School.


It was a busy week for sports sports as every team was in action. The boys swimming team suffered its first defeat, but the girls basketball team qualified for the CIAC Class LL state tournament.

Saturday, Feb. 4 – Wrestling

Ledyard Duals @ Ledyard HS

Southington went 3-1 in the event, which also with the No. 9 Blue Knights featured top 10 teams in No. 2 Xavier-Middletown, No. 4 Ledyard and No. 7 Trumbull.

The Blue Knights (18-2) defeated Waterford (51-19), Middletown (37-25) and Trumbull (39-35), but dropped a 49-21 decision to the host squad.

Saturday, Feb. 4 – Boys Hockey
Hall/Southington 4, E.O. Smith/Tolland/Windham 1 @ West Hartford

Paden Cipolla, Cody Backus and Trey Lerner scored in the third period as the Warrior Knights (4-6-1) won at home. Sam Sloan had a goal and an assist. Jim Nardi and Justin Rose each had an assist and Jeff Moore had 22 saves for Hall/Southington.

Saturday, Feb. 4 – Cheerleading
CCC Championships @ Bristol Eastern

Led by six all-conference picks, Southington won the West Division title and finished fifth overall amongst 18 teams.

Seniors Alyssa Blanchette, Lindsay Clavette, Jenna Luponio and Michaela Sadlowski were named all-conference along with juniors Cassie LePage and Chloe Lupton.

Friday, Feb. 3 – Girls Basketball
Southington 42, Northwest Catholic 41 @ Southington

Christine Swol made the second of two free throws with seven seconds to play to give the Blue Knights (8-9) the victory and a spot in the Class LL tournament.

Megan McLaughlin had 11 points and Danielle Charamut added nine for Southington in snapping Northwest’s eight-game winning streak.

Friday, Feb. 3 – Boys Basketball
Northwest Catholic 83, Southington 51 @ West Hartford

Shane Cooper had 13 points and Alex Borofsky 11 for the Blue Knights (2-13) in the road loss. The defeat officially ended Southington’s chances for a Class LL tournament berth.

Thursday, Feb. 2 – Gymnastics
Southington 137.95, Wethersfield 105.95 @ Silas Deane MS, Wethersfield

Kayla Nati led four Blue Knights (2-1) at the top of the all-around scores in the easy victory. Nati’s total of 35.2 topped teammates Lexi Rothstein (35.1), Olivia Morrell (33.8) and Sarah Leahy (32.05).

Nati was first in the vault (9.4) and bars (8.65), tied for second on floor (8.9) and was fourth on beam (8.3). Rothstein was second on vault (8.9), bars (8.2) and beam (8.9) and was first on floor (9.1).

Morrell was third on vault (8.5), fourth on bars (7.2), first on beam (9.4) and fourth on floor (8.7). Leahy was eighth on vault (7.8), third on bars (8.05), sixth on beam (7.8) and third on floor (8.4).

Toni Penta was fifth on vault (8.2), third on beam (8.7) and tied for second on floor (8.9). Amanda Mirando was sixth on vault (8.1) and seventh on beam (6.9).

Wednesday, Feb. 1 – Boys Hockey
Rocky Hill/RHAM/Middletown 5, Hall/Southington 3 @ Cromwell

Trey Lerner, Jim Nardi and Chris Anderson scored for the Warrior Knights in the road loss. Dave Valentukonis and Justin Rose each had two assists, while Jesse Patterson and Will Thompson each had one for Hall/Southington.

Wednesday, Feb. 1 – Boys Swimming
Farmington 95, Southington 72 @ Southington

Despite two freestyle wins from Mike Smigelski, the Blue Knights fell to 6-1 on the season with the home loss. Smigelski touched first in the 50 (22.88 seconds) and 100 (49.83).

Jesse Cooney was first in the 200 IM (2:13.13), Vlad Kiveliyk won the 100 butterfly (59.64 seconds) and Matt Duszak was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.14).

Wednesday, Feb. 1 – Wrestling
Southington 28, Farmington 24 @ Southington

The Blue Knights used a 4-3 by Connor Morrell (220 pounds) and a 53-second pin by Travis Daly (285) in the last two matches to rally past sixth-ranked and previously-undefeated Farmington.

Tyler Mirando won, 1-0, at 106 and Zach Bylykbashi was a 2-1 winner at 113. Nate Solomon picked up a 14-4 major decision at 126, Ryan Dupuis posted an 8-5 win at 152 and Zach Maxwell (182) won by forfeit.

Wednesday, Feb. 1 – Skiing
CISL race @ Mount Southington

The SHS boys ski team placed third in Class L and fifth overall, while the Blue Knights’ girls team was third in Class L and sixth overall.

Brian Chambers (47.33) was third for his two runs, Austin Florian (47.52) was seventh, Robert Chambers was ninth (47.66) and Sebastian Doughty (49.81) was 16th for Southington.

Christa Case led the SHS girls with a 28th-place finish (55.14). Rebecca Ryan (56.41) was 35th, Alyssa Aligata (58.23) was 41st, Meghan Parks was 54th (62.57) and Laurel Pehmoeller (62.70) was 55th.

Tuesday, Jan. 31 – Boys Basketball
Southington 62, Conard 60 (2 OT) @ Southington

Ted Shaw’s two free throws with six seconds left in the second overtime proved to be the difference as Southington snapped an 11-game losing streak.

Alex Borofsky had 25 points, while Bill Queen and Chris Sherwill each had 10 points for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, Jan. 31 – Girls Basketball
Southington 43, Conard 24 @ West Hartford

Megan McLaughlin had 10 points for Southington in the road victory.

Monday, Jan. 30 – Skiing
Giant Slalom shootout @ Mount Southington

Four Southington boys and one member of the SHS girls’ team finished in the top 30 to advance to today’s next round of qualifying for the state team.

Austin Florian was first for the SHS boys with a best 2-out-of-3 total of 50.17 seconds, followed by Robert Chambers (fifth, 51.32), Brian Chambers (seventh, 51.72) and Sebastian Doughty (17th, 52.79). Erika Florian qualified for the SHS girls, placing 11th (52.22).

All five will compete in today’s second slalom event at Mount Southington hoping to qualify for a spot on the team that will compete in March in New Hampshire.

Saturday, Jan. 28 – Indoor Track
CCC Championships @ Floyd Little Athletic Center, New Haven

The SHS girls placed eighth with 26 points, while the Southington boys finished in a tie for 21st. Cherraine Davis led Southington with a New England-best effort of 43 feet, 6.5 inches in the shot put.

Erica Kosienski was sixth in the 55 meters (7.61 seconds), Cyndy Woolley placed sixth in the long jump (15-3), Rhiannon Jacobs was third in the pole vault (8-6), Audrey Snyder finished fifth in the pole vault (8-0) and Alyssa Lombardi was 14th in the 1,000 (3:24.91).

Kyle Hamel was 11th in the 1,600 (4:46.86) and ninth in the 3,200 (10:15.28). Joe Pappalardo was seventh in the 1,000 (2:53.92), Ben Gibbons was 10th in the 300 (38.35 seconds), Steve Boyington was 14th in the long jump (18-8.75), Damiaen Florian was 19th in the 1,600 (4:58.42) and Kyle Summa was 22nd (1:33.25) in the 600.

Saturday, Jan. 28 – Cheerleading
Nonnewaug Competition @ Woodbury

The Blue Knights opened their schedule with a first-place finish in the co-ed division.
