SHS Sports Wrap: The Week in Sports

A look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.


It was a relatively quiet week for Southington High winter sports. For the first time this season, weather impacted the schedule as a weekend snowstorm postponed plans for the hockey and wrestling teams.

Friday, Jan. 20 – Boys Swimming
Southington 89, Newington 81 @ Southington YMCA

Led by double-winners Mike Smigelski and Jesse Cooney, the Blue Knights remained unbeaten (4-0) with the home win.

Smigelski was first in the 100 (50.78 seconds) and 200 (1:51.76) freestyles, while Cooney won the 50 freestyle (24.46 seconds) and qualified for the state meet with a 1:01.21 clocking in the 100 backstroke.

Bryan Adie won the 200 IM in 2:22.25, Vlad Kiveliyk was first in the 100 butterfly (59.37 seconds) and Matt Duszak was the winner of the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.78.

Southington also swept the relays. The foursome of Cooney, Duszak, Kiveliyk and Joe Taglia won the medley relay in 1:52.25. Smigelski, Taglia, Adie and Dylan Figueiredo won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.45.

The 400 freestyle quartet of Smigelski, Kiveliyk, Cooney and Eddie Klein was first in 3:44.62.

Friday, Jan. 20 -  Girls Basketball
New Britain 36, Southington 33 @ Southington

Stephanie O’Keefe and Maeghan Chapman each scored nine points as the Blue Knights (6-7) lost at home.

Friday, Jan. 20 – Boys Basketball
New Britain 76, Southington 62 @ New Britain

Alex Borofsky scored 26 points and went 15-for-16 from the foul line, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the ninth consecutive loss for the Blue Knights (1-10).

Ted Shaw had 11 points, while Shane Cooper and Chris Sherwill each had nine for Southington.

Wednesday, Jan. 18 – Wrestling
Southington 46, Newington 21 @ Southington

Alex Martin (152 pounds), Tyler Hyde (160), Brandon Lariviere (170), Austin Sullivan (195) and Travis Daly (285) had pins for the Blue Knights (13-1) in the home victory.

Zach Bylykbashi (113) won by major decision, Nate Solomon (126) and Ryan Dupuis (138) won by decisions and Connor Morrell (220) won by forfeit for Southington.

Wednesday, Jan. 18 – Boys Swimming
Southington 96, East Hartford 69 @ Southington YMCA

Mike Smigelski won the 50 and 100 freestyles to lead Southington to the win. Smigelski finished the 50 in 22.72 seconds and the 100 in 50.53 seconds.

Mack Golos was first in the 200 freestyle (2:06.53) and second in the 500 freestyle (5:50.65). Jesse Cooney won the 100 backstroke (1:05.69) and was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.88).

Bryan Adie won the 200 IM (2:22.06) and Matt Duszak was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.56).

Southington swept all three relays. Duszak, Dylan Figueiredo, Vlad Kiveliyk and Joe Taglia combined to win the medley relay, while the quartet of Smigelski, Adie, Damian Chuchro and Taglia was first in the 200 freestyle relay.

Smigelski, Chuchro, Golos and Eddie Klein teamed to win the 400 freestyle relay.

Tuesday, Jan. 17 – Boys Basketball
Simsbury 78, Southington 63

Shane Cooper had a team-high 18 points, including four 3-point baskets, for Southington in the road loss.

Alex Borofsky had 17 points, Bill Queen 12 and Ted Shaw 11 for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, Jan. 17 – Girls Basketball
Southington 44, Simsbury 36 @ Simsbury

Danielle Charamut scored a game-high 13 points for Southington in the victory.

Stephanie O’Keefe added 10 points for the Blue Knights.
