SHS Sports Wrap: The Week in Sports

Take a look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.

As this bizarre winter season without snow continues, the regular season is rapidly coming to a close for teams. The indoor track teams took part in the class meets, while the hockey team continued to battle for a spot in the post-season.

Saturday, Feb. 11 – Hockey
Hall/Southington 5, Rockville/Manchester/Stafford 4 @ Bolton

Sam Sloan had three goals and an assist as Hall/Southington (5-7-1) picked up a victory on the road.

Chris Anderson (two assists) and Justin Rose also scored for Hall/Southington. Colin Grodzki, Trey Lerner, Dave Valentukonis and Paden Cipolla added assists and John Gradante had 26 saves for the Warrior Knights.

Friday, Feb. 10 – Girls Basketball
Hall 47, Southington 43 @ West Hartford

Danielle Charamut had a team-high 13 points for Southington (8-11) in the loss. Megan McLaughlin had 11 points and Stephanie O’Keefe added 10 for the Blue Knights.

Friday, Feb. 10 – Boys Basketball
Southington 46, Hall 42 @ Southington

Alex Borofsky scored a game-high 13 points for the Blue Knights (3-14) in the home win. Bill Queen added 11 points for Southington.

Friday, Feb. 11 – Boys Swimming
Hall 94, Southington 87 @ Cornerstone, West Hartford

Mike Smigelski won the 50 freestyle (23.17 seconds) and 100 freestyle (50.25) for Southington (6-3) in the defeat. Matt Duszak won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.59.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Joe Taglia, Bryan Adie, Dylan Figueiredo and Smigelski was first in 1:38.25. The 400 freestyle quartet of Vlad Kiveliyk, Taglia, Jesse Cooney and Smigelski won in 3:38.46.

Thursday, Feb. 9 – Skiing
CISL race @ Mount Southington

Southington wrapped up the regular season, finishing eighth in the boys’ competition and seventh in the girls’ event.

Brian Chambers (47.40 seconds) was third for the Blue Knights and Robert Chambers (47.48) was fourth. Sebastian Doughty (50.12) was 21st for Southington.

Christa Case led the SHS girls with a 23rd-place finish in 54.71 seconds. Rebecca Ryan (57.52) was 39th for the Blue Knights.

Thursday, Feb. 9 – Indoor Track
Class LL Championships @ Floyd Little Athletic Center, New Haven


Led by shot put champion Cherraine Davis, the Southington girls team finished tied for 12th place. Members of the boys team competed but failed to place high enough to score points.

The effort of 44 feet, two inches was best in New England. Davis set the previous high of 43-6½ at the CCC championships.

Cyndy Woolley was 16th in the 300 with a time of 45.61 seconds and placed 10th in the long jump (14-8½). Erica Kosienski was ninth in the 55 meters with a time of 7.71 seconds and Rhiannon Jacobs was eighth in the pole vault (9-0).

Alyssa Lombardi was 18th in the 1,000 (3:23.36). The 1,600 sprint medley team of Woolley, Micaila Dean, Lombardi and Kosienski was 11th in 4:45.13.

Steve Boyington led the Southington boys with a 12th-place finish in the long jump (18-1). Ben Gibbons was 14th in the 300 (38.48) and Kyle Hamel was 28th in the 1,600 with a time of 4:54.67.

Wednesday, Feb. 8 – Wrestling
Southington 42, New Britain 25 @ Southington

The CCC West champions closed out the regular season with the home win.

Zach Bylykbashi (113), Mark Jaffer (145), Don Rinaldi (170), Austin Sullivan (182) and Travis Daly (285) won by pin for Southington (19-2, 6-0). Zach Murillo (106) and Connor Morrell (195) won by decision and Zach Maxwell (220) won by forfeit.

Wednesday, Feb. 8 – Hockey
Newington/Berlin 3, Hall/Southington 1 @ West Hartford

Jim Nardi scored for the Warrior Knights in the home loss. Chris Anderson had an assist and John Gradante had 34 saves in net for Hall/Southington.

Tuesday, Feb. 7 – Boys Basketball
Farmington 55, Southington 28 @ Farmington

Alex Borofsky had 16 points for Southington in the road loss. The Blue Knights trailed at the half, 33-7.

Tuesday, Feb. 7 – Girls Basketball
Farmington 60, Southington 55 (2 OT) @ Southington

Stephanie O’Keefe had 18 points and Megan McLaughlin added 16, including four 3-pointers, for the Blue Knights. Farmington made 24 free throws in the game.

Tuesday, Feb. 7 – Boys Swimming
Conard 93, Southington 85 @ Cornerstone, West Hartford

Vlad Kiveliyk won the 200 freestyle in 1:58.91, while Mack Golos was first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:37.52.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Joe Taglia, Adam Sokolowski, Kiveliyk and Mike Smigelski touched first in 3:44.38.

Tuesday, Feb. 7 – Gymnastics
Southington 139, Conard 137.8, Hall 88.95 @ West Hartford

Freshman Lexi Rothstein was first in the all-around with 35.55 points as Southington (4-1) posted a pair of victories. Rothstein was 3rd on vault (9.1), sixth on bars (8.4), tied for second on beam (8.8) and tied for first on floor (9.3).

Kayla Nati tied for fourth in the all-around, finishing with 34.20 points. Nati was eighth on vault (8.4), fifth on bars (8.5), sixth on beam (8.05) and tied for second on floor (9.25).

Freshman Sarah Leahy was in the all-around at 33.95, finishing 10th on vault (8.2), second on bars (8.7), fifth on beam (8.15) and tied for sixth on floor (8.85). Olivia Morrell was eighth overall at 32.15 points after placing seventh on bars (8.1), tied for seventh on beam (7.9) and ninth on floor (8.0). Morrell also scored 8.15 on vault.

Toni Penta was first on vault (9.3), tied for second on beam (8.8) and fourth on floor (9.15). Amanda Mirando was 10th on beam (7.2) and fifth on floor (8.9). Mirando also scored 7.8 on vault.

Monday, Feb. 6 – Skiing
Slalom Shootout @ Mount Southington

Three members of the Southington High team qualified to represent Connecticut in the New England competition in March following top-12 overall performances.

Austin Florian won all three runs, finishing the two-event competition in first place with a time of 114.96 seconds. Bob Chambers (117.25) finished in ninth place and Brian Chambers (117.51) was 10th. Sebastian Doughty (121.44) was 15th and was named as an alternate to the Connecticut team.

Erika Florian was slated to compete for the SHS girls, but an ACL injury suffered last week ended her season.
