SHS Sports Wrap: Winter Sports Week 2
A look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.
Five Southington High teams were in action as the Christmas break approached. It was a week of mixed results, highlighted by two more wins for the unbeaten wrestling squad.
Friday, Dec. 23 – Wrestling
Southington 46, Platt 16 @ Platt

Steffan Mayette (132 pounds), Noah Sheffy (138), Connor Morrell (220) and Tyler Mirando (106) won by pin as the Blue Knights moved to 3-0.
Zach Bylykbashi (113) picked up a 14-0 victory, Brandon Lariviere (170) took a 7-3 decision and Zach Maxwell (182) added a 7-2 decision for Southington. Ryan DuPuis won 2-1 at 145, while Mark Jaffer was a 7-5 winner at 152 for the Blue Knights.

Friday, Dec. 23 – Boys Swimming
Southington 93, Windsor 72 @ Southington YMCA
Led by Georgetown-bound Mike Smigelski’s two individual wins, Southington opened the season with a home victory. Smigelski won the 100 (50.79 seconds) and 200 freestyles (1:53.81) and teamed with Dylan Figueiredo, Joe Taglia and Bryan Adie to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.01.
Jesse Cooney won the 200 IM (2:14.32) and 100 backstroke (1:03.50) for Southington. Vlad Kiveliyk won the 100 butterfly (59.43 seconds) and 500 freestyle (5:45.65).
Cooney, Kiveliyk, Matthew Duszak and Taglia combined to win the 200 medley relay in 1:48.70.
Friday, Dec. 23 – Hockey
Hall/Southington 3, East Catholic 3 (OT) @ Simsbury
Owen Kantor, Sam Sloan and Chris Anderson scored in the third period as the Warrior Knights (1-1-1) rallied from a 2-0 deficit after two periods. John Gradante had 33 saves in net for Hall/Southington.
Thursday, Dec. 22 – Boys Basketball
Windsor 107, Southington 49 @ Windsor
Windsor jumped out to a 19-point lead after one quarter and never looked back in the victory. Alex Borofsky had 14 points and Ted Shaw added 10 for Southington (1-3).
Thursday, Dec. 22 – Girls Basketball
Windsor 44, Southington 43 @ Southington
Alexus Williams scored with five seconds left to give the Warriors the victory over the host Blue Knights (3-3). Stephanie O’Keefe had 15 points and Danielle Charamut added 13 for Southington.
Tuesday, Dec. 20 – Wrestling
Southington 44, Conard 18 @ West Hartford
Alex Richardson (113), Nate Solomon (126), Noah Sheffy (132), Ryan Dupuis (145) and Travis Daly (285) all won by pin for Southington. Tyler Mirando (106) and Tom Gallagher (138) won by major decision, while Zach Bylykbashi (120) and Brandon Lariviere (170) each won by decision for Southington.
Monday, Dec. 19 – Girls Basketball
Newington 41, Southington 33 @ Newington
Megan McLaughlin had 15 points for Southington, including three 3-pointers, for the Blue Knights in the road loss. Danielle Charamut added 11 points for Southington.
Monday, Dec. 19 – Boys Basketball
Newington 67, Southington 61 @ Southington
Newington scored 29 points in the fourth quarter to pull out the CCC West contest. Alex Borofsky had a game-high 23 points for the Blue Knights. Ted Shaw added 17 points and Shane Cooper scored 14, including four 3-point baskets, for Southington.
