SHS Sports Wrap: Wrapping Up the Regular Season

A look back at this week in sports for Southington High School.

It was a week of both regular season and post-season action for Southington High School sports teams, highlighted by Travis Daly’s first-place finish in the 285-pound division of the CIAC Class LL wrestling championships.

Friday/Saturday, Feb. 17-18
Class LL wrestling @ Trumbull

Led by Daly’s victory, Southington finished fifth among 27 teams with 125 points at the two-day competition.

Zach Maxwell (195) finished in second place, while Nate Solomon (126) placed third. Tyler Mirando (106) was in fourth and Mark Jaffer (145) was sixth. All five will compete in the State Open, which will be held Friday and Saturday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.

Saturday, Feb. 18 – Cheerleading
Windsor Warrior Challenge

Southington continued its winning ways, placing first in the co-ed division at the ninth annual event.

Saturday, Feb. 18 – Indoor Track
State Open at FLAC, New Haven

SHS senior Cherraine Davis had an effort of 42 feet, 4.5 inches to win the shot put event. It was the third consecutive State Open title in the event for Davis, who will compete for Central Connecticut in the fall.

Saturday, Feb. 18 – Hockey
Cheshire 5, Hall/Southington 1 @ Veterans, West Hartford

Sam Sloan scored an unassisted goal and John Gradante had 41 saves for the Warrior Knights (6-8-1) in the home loss.

Friday, Feb. 17 – Gymnastics
Southington 142.70, RHAM 138 @ CATS, Cheshire

Southington (5-2) closed out the regular season with a win at home.

Toni Penta was third in the all-around with 36.20 points, finishing second on vault (9.2), second on floor (9.35), tied for fourth on bars (9.0) and tied for fifth on beam (8.7). Kayla Nati (35.65) was fifth, tying for first on vault (9.2), third on bars (9.05), fourth on floor (8.9) and placing eighth on beam (8.5).

Olivia Morrell (35.35) was seventh, Lexi Rothstein (35.2) placed eighth and Sarah Leahy (33.95) was ninth. Morrell was third on floor (9.0), sixth on beam (8.65), seventh on bars (8.6) and tied for third on vault (9.1).

Rothstein was third on beam (8.95), fifth on bars (8.8), eighth on floor (8.45) and tied for fourth on vault (9.0). Leahy was sixth on bars (8.7), seventh on beam (8.6) and floor (8.6) and tied for eighth on vault (8.1).

Friday, Feb. 17 – Boys Basketball
Southington 66, Weaver 60 @ Weaver, Hartford

Chris Sherwill had 17 points as the Blue Knights (4-15) held on for the win after leading by 17 points heading into the fourth quarter.

Alex Borofsky had 16 points and Ted Shaw added 15 for Southington.

Friday, Feb. 17 – Hockey
Hall/Southington 4, BCL 2 @ Bolton Ice Palace

Justin Rose had a pair of goals to lead the Warrior Knights over Bolton/Coventry/Lyman Memorial.

Owen Kantor and Sam Sloan (assist) also scored for Hall/Southington. Joe Gambardella, Colin Grodzki and Jesse Patterson had assists and John Gradante had 22 saves for the Warrior Knights.

Wednesday, Feb. 15 – Gymnastics
Glastonbury 145.20, Southington 140.85 @ CATS

Olivia Morrell was fourth in the all-around with 35.65 points to lead the Blue Knights. Morrell was second on vault (9.3), fifth on beam (8.5), sixth on bars (8.6) and tied for fourth on floor (9.25).

Lexi Rothstein (35.35) was fifth, Toni Penta (34.80) was sixth, Kayla Nati (33.85) placed eighth and Sarah Leahy (33.40) finished ninth.

Rothstein was third on beam (8.9), fifth on floor (9.05), tied for fifth on vault (9.0) and tied for seventh (8.4) on bars. Penta tied for third on vault (9.2), fourth on bars (8.7) and seventh on beam (8.0) and was seventh on floor (8.9).

Nati was fourth on vault (9.1), fifth on bars (8.65), sixth on floor (9.0) and added a 7.1 score on beam. Leahy tied for fourth on bars (8.7), seventh on beam (8.0) and 10th on floor (8.5) and posted an 8.2 score on vault.

Amanda Mirando was eighth on floor (8.8), tied for seventh on beam (8.0) and scored an 8.3 on vault.

Tuesday, Feb. 14 – Boys Swimming
Manchester 97, Southington 86 @ Manchester

Mike Smigelski was a double-winner in the freestyles as Southington (6-4) dropped its fourth consecutive meet.

Smigelski was first in the 50 (23.09 seconds) and 100 (56.90) for the Blue Knights and teamed with Jesse Cooney, Vlad Kiveliyk and Joe Taglia to win the 200 medley relay in 1:51.26.

Matt Duszak added a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.52.

Tuesday, Feb. 14 – Boys Basketball
Simsbury 52, Southington 40 @ Simsbury

Alex Borofsky had a team-high 24 points for Southington in the road loss.

Monday, Feb. 13 – Girls Basketball

Southington 51, New Britain 31 @ New Britain

Danielle Charamut had 15 points as Southington (9-11, 7-7 CCC West) closed out the regular season with the road win.

Stephanie O’Keefe had 13, Megan McLaughlin 11 and Maeghan Chapman 10 for the Blue Knights.
