SHS Suffers Tough Week in Sports

Take a look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.

It was a tough week overall for sports teams as the baseball and girls tennis teams each went 0-3. In all, the 10 teams posted a collective record of 4-16 as only the softball, boys volleyball and boys tennis squads were victorious.

Saturday, May 12 – Boys and Girls Track
Greater Hartford Invitational @ Simsbury

Rhiannon Jacobs placed third in the pole vault with a height of 9-6, leading the competitors for the girls’ team. Kyle Hamel’s ninth-place time of 10:02.35 in the 3,200 was the best finish amongst the boys.

The 4x800 girls relay team was 11th in 11:31.39. In the 4x100, the girls team placed seventh in 52.07 seconds and the boys tied for 11th place in 45.90 seconds. Erica Kosienski was eighth (13.26) in the 100 and Allison Vachon (13.32) finished 11th.

Stephen Barmore was 21st in the 100 (11.82) and 25th in the 400 (53.76). Nate Bonenfant was 20th in the long jump (18-6½) and triple jump (37-0). Joe Pappalardo was 25th in the 800 at 2:09.26 and Austin Florian was 23rd (36-2) in the triple jump.

Alyssa Lombardi was 21st (5:49.81) in the 1,600 and Audrey Snyder was 17th (7-0) in the pole vault. Christine Swol was 10th in the shot put (30-3¾), 21st in discus (75-7) and 16th in javelin (86-0).  Claire Manente was 21st (82-1 ½) in the javelin. In the long jump, Sarah Palko (15-5 ¾) placed 10th and Nicole Wershoven (14-5) was 18th.

Friday, May 11 – Baseball
Northwest Catholic 3, Southington 1 @ Northwest

In West Hartford, four errors led to three unearned runs and the third loss in five days for the Blue Knights (8-8). Justin Robarge pitched a four-hitter and homered for Southington’s only run.

Friday, May 11 – Boys Tennis
Hall 7, Southington 0 @ Southington

The Blue Knights (5-7) won only three games in four singles matches in dropping the home contest.

Southington’s closest match came in No. 3 doubles as Alex Angelillo and Grant Ogrin dropped a 7-5, 6-2 contest.

Friday, May 11 – Girls Tennis
Hall 6, Southington 1 @ Hall

Caroline Rodman had the only win for Southington (7-4) at No. 3 singles, battling to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory.

Friday, May 11 – Boys Lacrosse
Glastonbury 11, Southington 7 @ Southington

The Blue Knights fell to 3-10 with their third consecutive loss.

Thursday, May 10 – Baseball
Conard 5, Southington 3 @ Southington

Matt Sirois (three hits), Justin Rose and Dave Palladino each had an RBI single for the Blue Knights in the loss. Southington committed three errors and left eight runners on base in the game.

Thursday, May 10 – Boys Tennis
Farmington 4, Southington 3 @ Southington

Jon Sadusky won, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 3 singles for the Blue Knights. The No. 2 doubles team of Gary Beaumont and Zaya Oshana won, 6-4, 6-3, while the No. 3 duo of Alex Angelillo and Grant Ogrin won, 6-4, 6-0.

Thursday, May 11 – Girls Tennis
Farmington 6, Southington 1 @ Farmington

Caroline Rodman was the lone winner for Southington, posting a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.

Thursday, May 10 – Golf
Newington 163, Southington 164 @ Indian Hill CC


Jared DeGumbia led Southington (4-7) with a 39 in the one-shot loss in Newington. Dave Valentukonis (41), Brandon Wheeler (42) and Eric Flood (42) also scored for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, May 9 – Softball
Southington 18, Conard 0 @ Conard

Jordyn Moquin pitched a two-hitter and Nicole Rossitto had six RBI for the Blue Knights (13-2) in the easy win in West Hartford.

Rossitto had a single, double and triple. Sydney Ferrante and Rachel Harvey (double) each had three hits for Southington.

Wednesday, May 9 – Boys Volleyball
Newington 3, Southington 1 @ Newington

Dan Carbone had 20 kills and nine digs for the Blue Knights (11-4) in Newington’s 21-25,25-14, 25-20, 25-20 victory.

Tuesday, May 8 – Golf
Conard 155, Southington 167 @ Hawks Landing

Jared DeGumbia led the Blue Knights with a 39, one shot ahead of teammate Dave Valentukonis. Brandon Wheeler and Tom Fischer each shot 44 for Southington.

Tuesday, May 8 – Girls Lacrosse
Glastonbury 19, Southington 9 @ Southington

The Blue Knights fell to 5-4-1 with the loss at home.

Tuesday, May 8 – Boys Track
Conard 102½, Southington 47½ @ Conard

Stephen Barmore, Jarrid Grimmett and Zach Maxwell took the top three spots in the 100 for the Blue Knights (4-2) in the loss in West Hartford.       

The 4x100 relay team of Maxwell, Grimmett and Nate and Anthony Bonenfant was first as was Travis Daly in the shot put, discus and javelin.

Tuesday, May 8 – Girls Track
Conard 89, Southington 61 @ Conard

The Blue Knights dropped to 2-4 in West Hartford with their third consecutive loss.

Erica Kosienski won the 100 (13.27) and 200 (27.64) for Southington. Rhiannon Jacobs won the pole vault (8-6), Christine Swol was first in the shot put (31-7 ½), Nicole Wershoven won the long jump (14-2) and Katie Wendt was first in the 100 high hurdles (18.6).

The 4x100 relay team added a first-place finish with a time of 51.99 seconds.

Tuesday, May 8 – Boys Lacrosse
Hall 12, Southington 11 @ Southington

Kevin Cop scored four goals for the Blue Knights in the home loss.

Pat Hamel, Tom Gallagher and Joe Gentile each scored twice for Southington. Ryan Langdon had a goal and Billy Thomson had 11 saves for the Blue Knights.

Monday, May 7 – Baseball
Newington 3, Southington 1 @ Newington

Junior Nichols’ RBI groundout plated the Blue Knights’ only run in the road defeat. Brett Susi allowed six hits and one earned run for Southington.

Monday, May 7 – Softball
Southington 15, Newington 0 (6) @ Southington

Jordyn Moquin pitched a one-hitter and Nicole Rossitto went 4-for-5 with a triple and two RBI for the Blue Knights.

Alyssa Dumphy had two hits including a double and two RBI for Southington.

Monday, May 7 – Boys Tennis
Southington 4, Northwest Catholic 3 @ Southington

No. 4 singles player Nate Mullins pulled out a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 victory as the Blue Knights won at home.

Jon Sadusky won, 7-6 (6-3), 6-4 at No. 3 singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Gary Beaumont and Zaya Oshana won, 6-3, 6-0, while the No. 3 duo of Alex Angelillo and Grant Ogrin were 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 winners.

Monday, May 7 – Girls Tennis
Northwest Catholic 6, Southington 1 @ St. Joseph’s College

Courtney Race was the Blue Knights’ only winner, posting a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles in West Hartford.

Monday, May 7 – Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Bulkeley 0 @ Southington

Dan Carbone had eight kills and 17 points for the Blue Knights in the 25-18, 25-7, 25-19 win.

Billy Rivera had seven kills and six points, Chris Sherwill had seven kills and Peter DelBuono added seven points and six digs. Alex Zajda had seven points, 45 assists and five digs for Southington.
