SHS Winter Sports Wrap - End of Season

It's officially the end of the winter sports season. Take a look at what happened during the final week.

As temperatures approach 80 degrees in mid-March, the winter sports season at has come to an end. The campaign failed to yield any team state titles, but Mike Smigelski (boys swimming) followed New England titlist Cherraine Davis (indoor track) as Connecticut’s best.

Saturday, March 17 – Boys Swimming

State Open @ Yale, New Haven

Smigelski broke his own school record in the 50 freestyle, claiming the title with a time of 21.14 seconds. Southington finished in 18th place overall with 93 points.

Smigelski added a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle, breaking his school record with a time of 46.49 seconds.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Jesse Cooney, Bryan Adie, Vlad Kiveliyk and Smigelski placed 13th with a time of 1:30.97. The same quartet was 18th in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:21.53 clocking.

Wednesday, March 14 – Boys Swimming
Class LL finals @ Wesleyan, Middletown

Smigelski was first in the 100 freestyle in 46.56 seconds and was second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.55 seconds.

Cooney was 23rd in the 200 IM (2:08.83), Kiveliyk placed 15th in the 100 butterfly (56.93 seconds) and Matt Duszak was 23rd in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.75).

The 200 medley relay team of Dylan Figueiredo, Duszak, Adam Sokolowski and Joe Taglia placed 13th in 1:53.37. The quartet of Cooney, Adie, Kiveliyk and Smigelski finished seventh in both the 200 freestyle (1:31.00) and 400 freestyle (3:22.87) relays.
