Southington Takes Tough 5-2 Loss to Fermi

Kraucunas, Chicorka score two goals each as Fermi clinches Class M state tournament field hockey berth.

The sky was gray and rainy and the air was chilly, but the Fermi High School field hockey offense was red-hot Wednesday.

The Falcons jumped to a 3-1 halftime lead en route to a 5-2 victory over Southington in CCC East action in Enfield.

Stacey Kraucunas had a pair of first-half goals to provide Fermi the lead, then Laura Chicorka blasted home a pair after intermission to seal the victory for the Falcons.

"Turf is a whole new surface for us, and we could definitely see the difference," Southington coach Erin Luddy said. "The girls were ready to play, we had our opportunities and our shots, but they kind of wore us down."

Kraucunas got things started just 2:33 into the contest, assisted by Kerry Davis. The Blue Knights answered back at 11:25 with a goal by Sarah Collier.

Fermi seemed to be having a bit of trouble over the next few minutes, forcing coach Amy Bartholomew to call a timeout.

"We weren't receiving the ball, we weren't going to the ball, and we weren't going to what we call our scoring spots," Bartholomew said.

When the Falcons returned to the field, they were rejuvenated, and Davis immediately scored with 9:02 to play in the first half, assisted by Francesca Ceppetelli. With just under five minutes to go before halftime, Kraucunas notched her second goal of the afternoon, also assisted by Ceppetelli.

Near the midway point of the second half, Chicorka took over, drilling home a shot from the top of the circle. Less than three minutes later, she knocked another one home, assisted by Danielle McCoy.

Southington never gave up, and recorded the game's final score by Casey Sullivan with 1:15 remaining.

Goalkeeper Kayleigh Shaughnessy stopped six shots to earn the win in net for Fermi, while Susie Marcoux had 13 saves for the Blue Knights.

With their fourth straight victory, the Falcons improved to 7-4, and clinched a berth in the Class M state tournament. They travel to CCC East rival South Windsor Friday at 3:45 p.m.

Southington dropped to 3-7-0-2. The Blue Knights entertain winless Wethersfield Friday at 3:45 p.m.
