Southington Teen Takes Voyage of Discovery

Connecticut River Academy student sets sail aboard the tall ship Half Moon.

Southington teen Elizabeth Boccardi returns on Tuesday, October 23, 2012, from a five-day educational trip aboard the tall ship Half Moon, where she served as a crew member.

Boccardi, a high school sophomore, took part in the trip through her school, Goodwin College’s Connecticut River Academy in East Hartford. The Half Moon, a replica of Henry Hudson's 1609 vessel, is a sailing museum partnering with the school.

Boccardi and the other student crew members slept aboard the ship. They spent their days conducting experiments on the Hudson River and Long Island Sound and assuming the responsibilities of a ship’s crew.

Acting as real sailors, the students kept watch through the night, handled the rigging, and performed other duties under the command of Captain William "Chip" Reynolds. Connecticut River Academy teachers also accompanied them on the voyage.

While onboard, the students also sailed into New York Harbor and got a view of the Statue of Liberty and the New York City financial district.

The Half Moon will be docked on the Connecticut River in East Hartford this weekend. Goodwin College, located at One Riverside Drive, is offering tours of the ship on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 27 and 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
