St. Thomas Students Honored With NJHS Induction

The National Junior Honor Society at St. Thomas School now has six new members after it's induction ceremony last week.

On Friday, April 20, six members of the St. Thomas School Middle School were inducted into the Father McVerry Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The chapter currently has seven members from the eighth-grade at the school, and these six new candidates were inducted in a ceremony with parents, grandparents and friends in attendance.

The new inductees are eighth-graders Thomas Melvin, Dominic Nazzaro, Michael Ranagan and seventh graders, Ross Ayer, Anthony Dortenzio and Michael Nanfito. Students are encouraged to apply to the chapter if they have an overall grade point average of 85 and meet the following National Junior Honor Society criteria.

To become a member, candidates must show qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, service and citizenship.

During the ceremony, current members lit candles representing one of each of the qualities and then read the definition to the congregation.

Alyssa Morrissey lit the first candle representing Scholarship, which was defined as “the possession of knowledge gained by study.”

Megan Miller lit the candle representing leadership, which she read the definition as “showing control in a situation, making decisions that others can follow, being ready to accept punishment and setting a good example.”

Jameson Kief lit the candle for Character, described as a quality that distinguishes a certain individual as upright, honorable and exceptional. Kimberly Arnold lit the candle for Service defining it as “the act of giving one’s self without being asked.”

Katherine Galvin lit the candle for Citizenship which was defined as obeying the rules of the school, helping other students and showing respect to property, fellow students and faculty. The ceremony ended with a reading of the pledge by all members of the chapter.
