Third Straight Upset Puts SHS Baseball in Semi-Finals

The Southington High School Blue Knights softball and baseball teams each look to take home the titles as they prepare for championship week.

The final week of the spring sports season - state championship week - is upon us. Heading into the final days, three squads remain alive.

The baseball and softball teams have reached the Class LL semifinals. The golf team competes today in the Division I tournament at Tallwood Country Club in Hebron. Southington is ranked 17 out of 20 competing teams.

Sunday, June 3 – Baseball
Southington 3, Amity 1 @ Woodbridge

Justin Robarge allowed seven hits in seven innings and the No. 18 Blue Knights (15-8) used an error to score two unearned runs in the sixth to defeat No. 7 Amity in a Class LL quarterfinal at Amity.

Chris Katz was unable to hold on to Matt Sirois’ drive to deep center, allowing Southington to score the lead run in the sixth. Ben Nichols followed with an RBI single to give the Blue Knights a 3-1 lead.

Robarge struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. Sirois had an RBI single in the top of the first before the Spartans tied it in the bottom of the inning.

With the victory, Southington advances to the final four Tuesday to take on No. 6 South Windsor in an all-Central Connecticut Conference semifinal at Muzzy Field in Bristol at 7 p.m. Shelton, ranked No. 4, faces No. 8 East Hartford in the first LL semifinal at 3:30 p.m.

Friday, June 1 – Softball
Southington 9, Danbury 1 @ Southington

Jordyn Moquin pitched a five-hitter, walked none and struck out two as the top-seeded Blue Knights (21-2) defeated No. 8 Danbury in a tournament quarterfinal.

Rachel Harvey had an RBI single in the first before Sydney Ferrante’s suicide squeeze bunt went over the first baseman’s head and scored two runs in a three-run third that included an RBI single by Moquin.

Nicole Rossitto had an RBI triple in the fourth. Ferrante added an RBI triple in a four-run sixth that included three Danbury errors.

Southington will play No. 4 Masuk in the first of two Class LL semifinals Tuesday at DeLuca Field in Stratford at 4 p.m. Westhill, ranked No. 2, faces No. 6 Amity in the second semifinal at 7 p.m.

Friday, June 1 – Boys Volleyball
Staples 3, Southington 1 @ Westport

Seeded No. 7, the Blue Knights (14-6) had their season come to an end with the loss to No. 2 Staples in a Class L quarterfinal at Staples.

Game scores were 25-22, 25-27, 25-22 and 25-18.

Wednesday, May 30 – Softball
Southington 1, Stamford 0 @ Southington

A throwing error in the fifth enabled Lauren Zazzaro to score from second with the only run as Southington held off No. 16 Stamford in a second-round game.    

Stamford loaded the bases with two out in the seventh, but Jordyn Moquin forced Stamford’s Courtney Kuzco to ground out to end the game.

Moquin struck out two, walked one and allowed seven hits. Zazzaro and Sarah Carangelo each had two hits for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, May 30 – Baseball
Southington 3, Pomperaug 2 @ Southbury

Brett Susi pitched a complete game as the Blue Knights eliminated the second-seeded Panthers at Pomperaug in a second-round game.

Ben Nichols had an RBI double and Susi added a sacrifice fly for Southington. The Blue Knights led, 3-0, into the fifth before Pomperaug scored a run and one more in the seventh, but was unable to push the tying run across.

Susi struck out five and allowed seven hits.

Wednesday, May 30 – Boys and Girls Track
Class LL Championships @ Manchester

Cherraine Davis won the shot put event and placed second in the discus for the girls team, qualifying for the State Open in both events. Davis had an effort of 42 feet, one inch in the shot and 114 feet, five inches in the discus to account for all 18 of the Blue Knights’ points.

Southington placed 14th in the girls’ competition. Travis Daly’s fifth-place effort of 45-6 in the shot accounted for Southington’s four points in the boys’ event. Southington placed 25th.

Kyle Hamel qualified for the Open with a ninth-place finish in the 3,200 with a time of 9:43.18. Stephen Barmore was 21st (11.71 seconds) in the 100, 15th in the 200 (23.66) and 14th in the 400 (51.93). Zach Maxwell was 30th (24.72) in the 200.

Anthony Bonenfant placed 11th (39-1¾) in the triple jump. Southington was 17th (45.67) in the 4x100 and 15th (8:44.25) in the 4x800.

Erica Kosienski was 14th (13.42) and 29th (28.11) for the Southington girls. Allison Vachon (13.44) placed 15th in the 100 and Cyndy Woolley was 29th (1:04.95) in the 400.

Rhiannon Jacobs (9-0) tied for 11th in the pole vault and Nicole Wershoven tied for 12th (15-0) in the long jump. Christine Swol was 22nd (29-0) in the shot put and 12th (98-9) in the javelin. Claire Manente (85-7) finished 19th in the javelin.

The 4x100 team was 13th (51.73) and the 4x800 team (10:55.88) placed 18th.

Tuesday, May 29 – Baseball
Southington 6, Danbury 4 @ Danbury

Matt Sirois went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI as Southington defeated No. 15 Danbury in a first-round tournament game.

Matt DiNello had two RBI singles for the Blue Knights. Justin Robarge went the distance for Southington, allowing eight hits and three walks while striking out six.

Tuesday, May 29 – Softball
Southington 14, NFA 0 @ Southington

A triple play put the end to the easy victory by Southington over the 32nd-ranked Wildcats in a first-round game.

Alyssa Dumphy went 2-for-4 and Sydney Ferrante went 3-for-4 with a walk. Jordyn Moquin went 3-for-4, including a pair of hits in a nine-run fifth.

Tuesday, May 29 – Girls Lacrosse
Trumbull 21, Southington 18 @ Trumbull

Sarah Pelligrinelli and Carolynn Keal each scored six goals, but it wasn’t enough as No. 18 Southington (6-8-1) fell to No. 15 Trumbull in a Class L qualifying round tournament game.

Taylor Hillard and Alexa Mitchell each had two goals for the Blue Knights. Alexa Luponio and Meg Asklar each had a goal and Allie Abacherli had 15 saves for Southington.

Tuesday, May 29 – Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Simsbury 0 @ Southington

Dan Carbone had 13 kills as Southington defeated No. 10 Simsbury in a first-round match. Game scores were 25-13, 25-18, 25-13.

Alex Borofsky had five kills, while Chris Sherwill had eight kills and six digs. Collin Kjellquist had six points and four aces, Kevin Casserino had eight points and Peter DelBuono added 14 digs. Alex Zajda had three aces, eight points, six digs and 32 assists for Southington.

Tuesday, May 29 – Girls Tennis
Newtown 7, Southington 0; Southington 5, Conard 2 @ Newtown

The 13th-ranked Blue Knights (12-5) won their Class L qualifying-round match against No. 20 Conard before falling to the No. 4 Nighthawks in a first-round match.

Alejandra Gimenez won, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Courtney Race posted a 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2 and No. 3 Caroline Rodman was a 6-4, 6-4 winner.

Andrea Rasimas and Annette Kaminski posted a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 1 and the No. 2 tandem of Jess Topper and Susan Murphy won, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 to clinch the team win over Conard.

Southington then took the court against the Nighthawks and dropped the next match. Gimenez will face Melissa Beretta of Staples in a first-round State Open singles match at Yale University today.
