UConn Developing an Eye in the Sky?

The university was issued a "drone aircraft certificate of authorization" by the FAA, but it won't be using it to keep tabs on anyone.

Some of us were a bit flummoxed earlier this week when the University of Connecticut was issued a drone aircraft certificate of authorization by the Federal Aviation Administration.

What was the school planning on doing with a drone? Administer breathalyzers from the sky during Spring Weekend? Monitor students' study habits? Chart the never-ending stream of men's basketball players transferring to other schools?

No on all counts. UConn wants to use the drone permit to develop a helicopter that flies itself, and the permit was required for a proposal from the United Technologies Research Center to conduct research for the project.

The project is in its infancy and hasn't yet been funded, so no flights have taken place. Students can rest easy!
