Sen. Markley Hosts Town Halls to Review Legislative Session

State Senator Joe Markley (R-Southington) has scheduled town hall meetings in each of the five communities in the 16th District during the last two weeks of June, to discuss the 2013 Legislative Session, and to hear the opinions and answer the questions of the people he represents. “We are currently in the closing days of the session, a time which I fear show the process at its worst,” said Sen. Markley. “I look forward to these evenings back in the district, to discuss what I’ve seen at the capitol, to voice my deep concerns about the direction of our state, and to examine what we can do together as citizens to restore common sense to government. “We cannot continue down the road of spending, taxes, and debt,” said Sen. Markley. “We have both the highest total tax burden and the largest per capita public debt of any state. As a result, we rank dead last in economic growth among all the states over the last twenty years. We have put ourselves in a terrible position, and it will not be easy to set things right. Government must be more efficient and less ambitious—and always answerable to We the People.” During his time in the Senate, Sen. Markley has honored significant pledges, including: • opposing any increase in state spending or state taxes. • fighting government waste, such as the $600 million New Britain to Hartford Busway. • legally challenging the sneaky tax imposed on utility bills that ultimately led to a repeal of the tax, saving CL&P customers $800 million in charges. • working across party lines to improve the efficiency of the social services system. • designing and sponsoring Connecticut’s first home care program for the elderly, allowing seniors to age in place rather than be institutionalized while saving the state money. “The town hall meetings are a genuine pleasure for me, and I think those who attend come away with additional insight into the work of the legislature and my own philosophy of government. I’ll be joined in each town by colleagues from the State House, to give citizens additional contact with their elected representatives. I hope everyone with an interest will be able to join us, and I look forward to hearing from the people I have the honor of serving at the capitol,” concluded Sen. Markley.
