Why are you running for office?

As a proud citizen of the United States and resident of 34 years in Southington, I am grateful to have the freedom and opportunity to once again run for the Southington Board of Education. It will allow me to continue to make a real difference in the lives of children and in the quality of life of our community.

I am running in order to:

  • Continue to make decisions that prepare our children with the knowledge and skills required to be ready for college/workforce and to promote Southington as an educational magnet for parents looking for a town to raise a family.
  • Apply my business, education, and community leadership knowledge and experience.
  • My experiences as a parent, corporate executive, consultant, adjunct college professor, tutor, and community leader lead to a diverse and qualified candidate.
  • I have over thirty years of business experience where I led large organizations, responsibly managed multi-million dollar budgets and developed plans, policies and practices successfully in marketing, operations, strategic planning and human resources.
  • My experience tutoring English as a Second Language in our school system has provided me a firsthand look at our curriculum, technology, facilities and policies.
  • Give Back. Education opened doors for me and now it’s my turn to return the rewards to the next generation. Teachers, principals and guidance counselors played a significant role in my life. After being covertly airlifted out of Communist Cuba without my parents, I lived in a refugee camp and then with several foster families. My mother escaped four years later. During her absence, libraries and schoolwork kept me focused. Her words of wisdom included ‘work hard in everything you do, be self-sufficient, get an education, make a difference, and give back along the way.’

I am running again to do just that…..work hard, give back and make a difference in the lives of our Southington children

What do you consider the two most important local issues and, if elected, how do you propose to address them?

As a Board of Education member, the two most important local issues I will actively pursue during the next two years include:

1. Ensuring the middle school construction projects do not interfere with student safety and learning. It will be my personal responsibility to conduct periodic visits, seek input from administration, staff and parents, and stay updated on the building committee status reports.

2. Preparing our students with 21st Century skills by integrating technology into learning, teaching, testing, communications and office operations. Since joining the BOE in 2011, developing a technology upgrading/expansion plan has been a personal top priority that needed attention and resources. With a three year technology plan now in place, I will stay close to ensure it is implemented to provide access, applications, functional equipment, professional development, individualized learning, and office efficiencies across the district. It will be an annual operating goal for our Superintendent of Schools. I will also be participating in the planning and implementation of the Southington Education Foundation/Southington Board of Education STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) on-line virtual university.

Promoting efficient “Shared Services” fiscal management between Board of Education and other town government functions is an opportunity that needs to be further explored. Consolidating, centralizing and combining functions are common practices in the business world to lower operating costs and expenses. As a member of the Finance committee, I will look for additional opportunities to promote efficiencies.

Terry Lombardi's extraordinary qualitifications speak for themselves. We ask the voters to speak on Tuesday, November 5,2013 by voting to re-elect Terry Lombardi to her invaluable place on the Board of Education.
