Blue Knights Run Over East Hartford in Season Opener

Four touchdowns in the first half help Southington go up big as they swat the Hornets 42-14.

With the lights shining down on Fontana Field and the school band playing in the stands, the stage was set. The stole the show right from the opening kickoff, wasting no time to capture their first Central Connecticut Conference win of the season, defeating the East Hartford Hornets 42-14.

Southington quarterback Stephen Barmore led the Blue Knights high-powered offense, throwing for two touchdowns and 201 yards on 14 of 20 passing attempts as the Blue Knights seek to establish themselves as a team to beat in the CCC.

From a spread offense, Barmore was able to lead the team to the end zone on the first two drives of the season, including a 38-yard run on the Blue Knights’ opening drive, to give the team a quick 7-0 lead. The Blue Knights defense wasted no time getting the ball back to their offense and running back Jarrid Grimmett pushed it in again with a 12-yard run to give Southington a 14-0 cushion.

They never looked back.

The offense remained potent throughout the first half, mixing their play and run selection on their way to a 28-0 halftime lead.

In the second quarter, Barmore connected with a 23-yard-pass touchdown pass to wide receiver Brain Kaminsky and just moments later, Grimmett struck again grinding his way into the end zone with a 7-yard touchdown run.

Grimmett finished the game with 77-yards rushing and the two touchdowns.

The teams exchanged a pair of touchdowns in the second half, including another air strike from Barmore, as Southington finished the game with an easy 42-14 win.

Southington's 42-14 victory over East Hartford paves the way for next week’s match-up with CCC rival New Britain as the Blue Knights host the Golden Hornets for bragging rights between Connecticut’s two biggest high schools.

The game, which is expected to generate a large turnout, will be held at Rentschler Field in East Hartford with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
