Blue Knights Take Home Championship

Southington High School overcame 28-14 halftime deficit to take home the CIAC Class LL football championship Thursday night.

Snow and winter weather wreaked havoc over the past week, delaying Southington's opportunity to take home a championship, but ultimately it wasn't enough to ice one of the state's hottest offensive units.

The Southington Blue Knights took home the CIAC Class LL football championship Thursday evening with a 52-34 victory over the seventh-ranked Fairfield Prep Jesuits in West Haven.

Trailing 28-14 at halftime, the offense found its rhythm en route to 38 second half points, allowing them to not only complete the comeback, but pull away in the final stages of the game.

Stephen Barmore led the offense for Southington, throwing for a total of four touchdowns, running in a fifth and capping the game in the fourth quarter with a 67 yard interception for a touchdown to put the game out of reach with just two minutes to play.

The Jesuits (12-3) entered the game as the perennial underdog, defeating #2 Glastonbury 38-18 before squeaking out a 29-28 victory over #6 West Haven later in the week. Their dreams came to an end, however, when the Jesuits met Southington.

The high powered offense that had outscored opponents in the playoffs 97-14 entering the game found their offense once again and were clicking on all cylinders after halftime.

They scored 14 points in the third quarter to tie things up, then took the lead on a 21-yard field goal off the foot of Kyle Smick in the fourth quarter. Fairfield Prep stormed back, however, driving up the field and capping the effort with a seven yard run by Nicholas Crowle to put the Jesuits up 34-31.

That was the last they would see of the lead.

Southington's Barmoe took control with two touchdown passes and capped the effort with the late interception for a touchdown.
