SHS Sports Wrap

A look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.

Southington  High teams fared pretty well as they settled into their routines following the spring vacation. All 10 teams were in action, but when the week drew to a close, only the Blue Knights' girls tennis squad remained unbeaten.

Monday, April 25 - Girls Tennis
Southington 4, Maloney 3 @ Meriden

The Blue Knights used two victories in singles and doubles to remain unbeaten. Corinne Horanzy was a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 and Alejandra Gimenez posted a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 3. A forfeit win at No. 4 singles and a 6-0, 6-1 decision by Tasha Lange and Annette Kaminski sealed the victory.

Monday, April 25 – Softball
Southington 3, Conard 2 @ West Hartford

Rachel Harvey had a two-run single and Michelle Sirois scattered four hits while striking out seven as the Blue Knights gave coach John Bores his 200th career victory (200-21). Harvey and Sydney Ferrante each had two hits for Southington.

Monday, April 25 - Boys Tennis
Southington 7, Maloney 0 @ Southington

No. 1 James DiNello (6-1, 6-0), No. 2 Stephen Murphy (6-0, 6-0) and No. 3 Keith Lebel (6-2, 6-0) had wins and the Blue Knights picked up a forfeit win at No. 4 singles. The duos of Matt Downes-Jon Sadusky and Joey Enright-Gary Beaumont each dropped only one game and Southington added another forfeit win at No. 3 doubles.

Monday, April 25 – Baseball
Southington 8, Conard 0 @ Southington

Sal Romano threw a one-hitter over six innings, striking out 11 as the Blue Knights coasted to the CCC West win. Zack Niles went 4-for-4 with a solo homer and finished with three RBI. Ben Nichols had three hits and three RBI for Southington.

Friday, April 29 - Boys Volleyball
Staples 3, Southington 0 @ Southington

After meeting in the last four CIAC Class L finals, the teams met in a non-conference match in Southington with the Wreckers handing the Blue Knights their first loss. Games scores were 25-20, 25-7 and 25-21. Mike Cannata had 15 kills and four blocks for the Blue Knights (7-1). Zac Nichols had four kills and nine blocks, while setter Ryan Masters had 18 assists.

Friday, April 29 – Baseball
Southington 6, Farmington 3 @ Farmington

Sal Romano came on in relief, striking out 11 in five scoreless innings of work after all the scoring was done in the first two innings. Romano (5-0) also went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Zack Niles had a pair of hits for Southington (6-2).

Friday, April 29 – Softball
Southington 26, Farmington 0 @ Southington

Brittney Cyr had four hits, while Sydney Ferrante, Julia Bocek and Sarah Carangelo added three each as the Blue Knights (9-1) extended their winning streak to eight games.

Tuesday, April 25 - Boys Golf
Northwest Catholic 160, Southington 187 @ West Hartford

Jim Stylinski paced the Blue Knights with a 45 at Wampanoag Country Club. Kevin Twerago (46), Aaron Skarzynski (48) and Jared DeGumbia (48) also scored for Southington (0-3).

Tuesday, April 25 - Boys Lacrosse
Southington 20, Old Lyme 7 @ Southington

Zach Wholley scored five goals for the Blue Knights in the non-conference win. Matt Prezioso, Jordan Chapman and Kevin Cop each had three goals and Bill Thompson had seven saves for Southington.

Wednesday, April 27 – Softball
Southington 8, Northwest Catholic 0 @ Southington

Michelle Sirois had a two-run single and pitched a three-hitter for Southington, striking out eight while allowing one walk. Rachel Mongillo had a two-run single and Brittney Cyr and Alyssa Dumphy each had two hits for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, April 27 - Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Maloney 1 @ Southington

Mike Cannata had 16 kills for Southington in the 25-9, 25-16, 20-25, 25-10 victory. Matt Russo had eight kills and Dan Carbone contributed seven for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, April 27 – Baseball
Northwest Catholic 3, Southington 2 @ West Hartford

Trailing 2-0, Southington tied it on a sacrifice fly by Matt DiNello in the fifth and an RBI single by Zac Nichols (2-for-3) in the sixth. Northwest won it in the bottom of the seventh when Aaron Wilson tripled with two out and scored on a infield hit. Joe Sullivan allowed six hits and three walks while striking out three for Southington.

Wednesday, April 27 - Boys Tennis
Southington 7, Windsor 0 @ Southington

Southington (7-1) rebounded from Tuesday's 7-0 loss at Avon with the easy CCC interdivisional shutout. Singles winners included No. 1 James DiNello (6-3, 7-6 (1)), No. 2 Stephen Murphy (6-3, 6-3), No. 3 Keith Lebel (6-3, 7-6 (4)) andNo. 4 Joey Enright (6-1, 6-0). All three doubles matches went three sets, but the duos of Matt Downes-Jon Sadusky at No. 1, Nate Beaumont-Chris Amnott at No. 2 and Alex Hoder-Gary Beaumont at No. 3 all won for Southington.

Wednesday, April 27 - Girls Tennis
Southington 7, East Hartford 0 @ Southington


Emily Sherwill's 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles started the success for Southington. Corinne Horanzy (6-0, 6-0), Alejandra Gimenez (6-0, 6-2) and Kelley Hwang (6-0, 6-0) added wins for the Blue Knights.  The doubles duos of Emily Jepsen-Katharine Otis, Natasha Lange-Annette Kaminski and Jocelyn Ceruti-Andrea Rasimas also won for Southington (6-0).

Tuesday, April 26 - Girls Lacrosse
Southington 14, Windsor 11 @ Southington

Sarah Pelligrinelli had three goals, while Carolyn Keal, Madison Altwies, Jordan Crowley, Gretchen Egan and Micaila Dean had two goals each for Southington. Sarah Falcetti had eight saves for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, April 26 - Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Shelton 0 @ Shelton

Zac Nichols and Mike Cannata each had seven kills for Southington in the 25-6, 25-5, 25-17 win. Jeff Kolb had six kills and Ryan Masters had 19 assists for the Blue Knights.

Saturday, April 23 - Boys Lacrosse
Southington 12, Pomperaug 3 @ Southington

Matt Prezioso and Kevin Cop each had four goals for the Blue Knights in the win. Prezioso, Zack Wholley and Tom Gallagher each had two assists for Southington and Billy Thompson had nine saves.
