A Look Back at the Week in Sports at Southington High School

Believe it or not, we're just weeks away from the end of the regular season for Southington High sports teams. It appears that most of the teams that can participate in the CIAC playoffs will do so, while the sports that highlight individuals are continuing their push to qualify as many athletes as possible for the postseason.

Saturday, April 30 - Boys Lacrosse

Southington 16, Newington 3 @Newington

Matt Prezioso, Zack Wholley and Mike Carrier each had five goals for Southington in the victory. Prezioso and Kevin Cop each had two assists and Billy Thompson and Brett McKenna combined for 10 saves in the Blue Knights' goal.

Monday, May 2 – Baseball
Southington 4, Hall 3 @ Southington

Zack Niles had a solo homer, Ben Nichols hit a two-run shot and Matt Bernacki added an RBI base hit as Southington built a 4-0 lead and hung on after Hall scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Joe Sullivan went six innings for the Blue Knights, allowing one earned run and five hits.

Monday, May 2 – Softball
Southington 13, Hall 0 @ West Hartford

Jordyn Moquin pitched a one-hitter, striking out nine. Moquin also had two hits including a double and two RBI for the Blue Knights. Sydney Ferrante had three hits including two doubles and two RBI and Alyssa Dumphy had two hits including a double and two RBI.

Monday, May 2 - Boys Tennis
Simsbury 6, Southington 1 @ Simsbury

Keith Lebel was the only winner for Southington, posting a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 2 singles.

Tuesday, May 3 - Boys Golf
Southington 162, Hall 164 @ Hawks Landing, Southington

Aaron Skarzynski and Jared DeGumbia each shot 39 as Southington picked up its first victory of the season. Jim Stylinski shot 40 and Kevin Twerago 44 for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, May 3 - Boys Tennis
Southington 4, Berlin 3 @ Berlin

The Blue Knights swept the singles matches to earn the victory.  James DiNello at No. 1 (6-2, 6-4), No. 2 Stephen Murphy (6-4, 6-1), No. 3 Keith Lebel (6-1, 6-1) and No. 4 Matt Downes (6-1, 6-3) were victorious for Southington.

Thursday, May 5 – Baseball
New Britain 11, Southington 2 @ Southington

The Blue Knights committed nine errors in the CCC West loss to New Britain. Chris Lee had a pair of hits for Southington. Sal Romano was handed his first loss after five victories, allowing two earned runs and two walks while striking out six in four innings.

Thursday, May 5 – Softball
Southington 25, New Britain 6 @ New Britain

Sydney Ferrante had four of Southington's 21 hits. Nicole Rossitto (homer), Alyssa Dumphy (double, five RBI) and Sarah Carangelo (double, triple, four RBI) each had three hits for the Blue Knights, who scored 12 runs in the first.

Thursday, May 5 - Boys Tennis
Southington 5, Newington 2 @ Newington

Stephen Murphy at No. 2 (6-2, 2-6, 7-5), No. 3 Keith Lebel (6-1, 6-2) and No. 4 Matt Downes (7-5, 6-1) had singles wins for Southington. The No. 2 doubles team of Jon Sandusky and Joey Enright posted a 6-4, 6-4 win, while the No. 3 duo of Gary Beaumont and Chris Amnott added a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2) win for the Blue Knights.

Monday, May 2 - Boys Volleyball
Newington 3, Southington 1 @ Newington

Mike Cannata had 23 kills and 10 blocks, but the Blue Knights dropped their second straight match with the 25-21, 25-21, 24-26, 31-29 loss. Dan Carbone had 10 kills, Zac Nichols nine blocks and Ryan Masters 37 assists for Southington. Matt Macchi had 14 digs and three aces for the Blue Knights.

Thursday, May 5 - Boys Lacrosse
Conard 10, Southington 8 @ Southington

Zach Wholley had three goals, while Kevin Cop and Matt Prezioso added two for the Blue Knights in the loss. Billy Thompson had 21 saves for Southington.

Wednesday, May 4 - Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Glastonbury 1 @ Glastonbury

Mike Cannata had 13 kills and Matt Russo added 10 for the Blue Knights in the 25-13, 15-25, 25-11, 25-16 win. Ryan Masters had 35 assists and 12 digs, while Dan Carbone had 10 digs for Southington.

Friday, May 6 - Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Conard 0 @ Southington

Ryan Masters had 19 assists and 13 digs for Southington in the 25-13, 25-12, 25-18 victory. Matt Russo had 10 digs, Dan Carbone eight kills and Mike Cannata five kills for the Blue Knights.

Friday, May 6 – Baseball
Southington 7, Fermi 3 @ Southington

Matt DiNello had a double and triple, while Ben Nichols added a pair of doubles for the Blue Knights. Alex Roger and George Dibble each had two hits in support of Tim Leahy.

Thursday, May 5 - Boys Golf
Southington 160, New Britain 205 @ Hawks Landing, Southington

Jim Stylinski led the Blue Knights with a 38. Kevin Twerago (39), Aaron Skarzynski (40) and Jared DeGumbia (43) also scored for Southington.

Friday, May 6 - Boys Tennis
Southington 4, Wethersfield 3 @ Southington

James DiNello at No. 1 was a 6-4, 6-3 winner for Southington as was No. 2 Stephen Murphy at No. 2 (6-3, 7-6) (1) , Matt Downes at No. 4 (6-0, 4-6, 6-1) and the No. 2 doubles team of Jon Sadusky and Joey Enright (6-3, 2-6, 7-5).

Friday, May 6 - Girls Tennis
Southington 4, Wethersfield 3 @ Wethersfield

The Blue Knights rebounded from their first loss of the season - a 7-0 home loss to Simsbury on Monday - to sweep the singles for the victory. Emily Sherwill at No. 1 (6-2, 6-3), No. 2 Alejandra Gimenez (6-3, 6-2), Courtney Race at No. 3 (6-2, 6-4) and Kelley Hwang at No. 4 (6-2, 4-6, 6-4) posted victories for Southington.

Friday, May 6 – Softball
Southington 5, Rocky Hill 2 @ Rocky Hill

Southington ran its record to 12-1 with the win. Nicole Rossitto had three hits including two triples and three RBI for the Blue Knights. Rachel Harvey had two hits for Southington.
