Southington Police Ask Caution in Using Fireworks

Don't be an injury statistic this July 4.

An average of 200 people end up in the emergency room each day in July as a result of injuries suffered from fireworks accidents. The is asking residents to take caution not to become a statistic this July 4.

With fireworks displays in the area delayed due to potential weather but skies expected to clear tonight, Southington police said Tuesday that there is likely to be an increase in fireworks use in the community this Independence Day.

"We just want people to be safe, beware of the dangers and use caution," said Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz. "Some of the statistics are staggering."

The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that even simple fireworks such as Sparklers and Roman Candles can be dangerous. These items alone accounted for a combined 24 percent of all injuries in 2011.

A total of 40 percent of these injuries occurred to men and women between the ages of 25 and 44, according to the CPSC study.

Southington Police and the CPSC are asking residents to consider the following tips before setting off any displays or even using simple fireworks in their backyard this week:

  • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Never try to reignite or pick up fireworks that have not gone off. They may still be active and could explode at any time.
  • Keep a bucket of water and/or garden hose ready in case of a fire or any other mishap.
  • Make sure all fireworks are legal before buying and using them.
  • Light one firework at a time and then move away quickly. Allow the firework to go off before returning.
