So That No One Goes Hungry

Bread for Life receives generous donation to feed local families as the Sihk Temple's Organization for Spiritual Enlightenment picks up the tab.

Sihk Temple leader Manmohan Singh Bharara says he donates to Bread for Life out of obligation, not helpfulness.

That's the spirit that led his Organization for Spiritual Enlightenment to pick up the tab enabling Bread for Life to purchase $600 worth of food from Restaurant Depot in Hartford this week.

Bharara, board member, said he has a passion for the organization because it helps the basic cause of hunger for people directly within the community.

"I think when we live comfortably, and God gives me more than I need to live, than I have a duty to share some earnings to a person who is in need," Bharara said. "It doesn't matter what faith that person is, because we are all a part of each other's lives."

Bread for Life Executive Director Eldon Hafford said the donation meets an ever-growing need at the soup kitchen, as well as at the Community Services food pantry.

Bread for Life and the food pantry provide groceries to nearly 700 families weekly while preparing 240 hot lunches per week to local senior centers and shut-in customer. About 30 people per day also receive a cold meal to take home from the soup kitchen.

"The number of people coming to our kitchen daily has continued to grow, as we've seen a large increase in the number of individuals and families seeking assistance at the food pantry," Hafford said. "As the need continues to grow here in our town, the support of organizations and individuals in our community is so greatly appreciated."

Bharara said he continues to look for more creative ways to fund Bread for Life, basically until no one goes hungry.

"It's very satisfying to be able to help in this way," Bharara said. "For me hunger is the most basic need, so that's what I'm focused on."

Food donations may be made Monday through Friday at , 76 Main St., between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., or at the Southington Community Food Pantry at , 91 Norton Street, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

"We appreciate all the donations we receive, because there are always families coming in needing food," Southington Community Services Director Janet Mellon said. "Especially in these hard times."
