"The Biggest Tag Sale Ever"

The town's first-ever tag sale will benefit ARC on Sept. 24.

Those looking to clear out their attics and de-clutter should know today is the last day to join the first-ever townwide tag sale.

Hosted by the ARC of Southington, the tag sale allows residents, organizations and businesses to combine their tag sale efforts by being included on a map illustrating where each tag sale in town is located. ARC handles all the advertising in local media outlets, making it easier for residents to get the word out about their tag sales, while supporting ARC.

"I signed up because I was planning on having a tag sale anyways, and this saved me from having to advertise in the paper - plus it supports a good cause," Carolyn Olson said. "We just moved here a year or two ago, and we have a lot of second sets of furniture."

ARC clerk Krista Galante said so far 22 residents and organizations have signed up for the event, and expects many more to sign up before the end of the day. Many businesses have also become involved, taking out ads on the maps, which will be sold for $1.

"We're really happy with the turnout so far, especially because it's the first year," Galante said.

While residents are using the sale to make some extra cash, organizations such as Southington Community Services are taking advantage of the event to earn some proceeds for their organizations.

"This is great because you get the word out about ARC, and you're doing something you wanted to do anyways," Southington Community Services Director Janet Mellon said. "Hopefully it works out well. All our proceeds will go right towards buying food."

Those looking to participate should call 860-628-9220, Ext. 100.

Proceeds from participation and advertising fees benefit ARC, a non-profit serving the mentally disabled by providing services in and outside of group homes, running recreation programs, and providing advocacy and respite services.

The sale will take place Sept. 24, with the rain date Sept. 25. Maps can be purchased at the following locations:

Tried to pick up a map at Bradley Memorial Gift shop and was told they don't go on sale until Saturday. How is that possible since the tag sale is Saturday - and the gift store is not open on Saturday?
