Details Scarce as Police Continue Investigation Into Saturday Hit-And-Run

Southington detectives are continuing to investigate a weekend crash in which at least one person took off on foot after striking a utility pole, but few details of the incident have been released.

Residents in the Marion Avenue and Burritt Street areas of Plantsville had their evenings disrupted on Saturday after a hit-and-run crash left the neighborhood without power and led to a police search that turned up no arrests.

Officers are investigating the circumstances of an apparent hit-and-run accident that knocked down a utility pole in the area, Southington Police Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz said Monday, although only a few details of the incident have been released.

The incident occurred shortly after an attempted traffic stop in the area of Buckland Street in Plantsville just after 7 p.m., Dobratz said. As the officer exited his vehicle for the traffic stop, the motor vehicle fled the scene.

Moments later, police received a call of a car crash at 463 Burritt St. with the occupants of the vehicle then fleeing the scene on foot. Police arrived on scene to find it was the car that had been stopped just a few minutes earlier, Dobratz said.

“The vehicle involved struck a utility pole and then made contact with another vehicle traveling on Burritt Street,” he said. “The people that were seen fleeing the scene were later located. Injuries were reported and the injured parties were transported to local hospitals.”

Three Patch readers wrote that the incident led police to conduct a full K-9 search in the area, some watching as police dogs sniffed through their backyards.

Dobratz said Monday that no arrests have been made in the incident, however, and the case remains under investigation. The names of those involved have not been released due to the pending investigation, he said.

“Our detectives are continuing to work on the case today and are following leads,” Dobratz said. “It is considered an active investigation and few additional details are available at this time.”
