Missing Lobster? Police Searching for Culprits in Theft of Iconic Statue

The Southington Police Department is searching for leads in finding a 5.5-foot tall lobster statue taken from the Gulf Shrimp Company on Atwater Street in April.

For years, the Gulf Shrimp Company has operated on Atwater Street and marked its success with a five and a half foot tall lobster sculpture standing in front of the seafood distribution company.

Not any more.

Southington police said Tuesday that company reported the statue has been stolen from its usual position at the entrance to the business at 240 Atwater Street. The theft allegedly occurred sometime in April and had gone unnoticed until a customer reported to owners that it was missing.

“It was a little comical to report a missing lobster. I was waiting for the chuckle on the other end. They took it seriously and knew exactly what I was talking about because so many people have seen it and noticed it when they drive by,” Carly Simoneaux, owner of the Gulf Shrimp Company, told NBC Connecticut.

Lt. Michael Baribault said the decorative fiberglass lobster was reported stolen this morning, the place where it once stood now empty.

“The lobster is red in color with black painted dots on one side. It weighs approximately 200 pounds and has an estimated value of $2,000.00. There were no witnesses to the theft and there are no known suspects at this time,” Baribault said.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the lobster or who may have taken it is asked to contact the Southington Police Department at (860) 621-0101.
