Late Game Heroics Lead Blue Knights Past Stamford, Into Championship Game

A single off an umpire in the sixth inning drove in the winning run to help Southington advance to the CIAC Class LL finals on Wednesday.

It took some late game heroics and a little bit of luck, but the Southington Blue Knights girls’ softball team is making their return to the CIAC Class LL championship game.

The top-seeded Blue Knights defeated No. 5 Stamford 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon at DeLuca Field in Stratford. They will now move to the championship game against Mercy High School, who defeated Bristol Central 9-2 on Wednesday.

The game is scheduled for Friday night at 7 p.m. at DeLuca Field.

Several fans and school officials confirmed that Southington took a 2-0 lead on several base hits in the first, only to give up the lead when the Stamford Black Knights came back late to tie in up in the top of the sixth on a double by Krista Robustelli and single by Colleen Adams.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning, however, the Blue Knights rallied back and took the lead for good when Rachel Harvey hit a single that struck an infield umpire and ricocheted, allowing a run to score.

The victory marked the second consecutive day that Southington High School saw a team advance to the championship game. The baseball team on Tuesday advanced to a Saturday Class LL final with a victory over Trumball.
