Southington Teen Charged in Early April Accident That Closed Burritt Street

Police said Alex Nevrivy caused an accident that led to injuries and left more than 100 CL&P customers without power on April 6 after he fled a traffic stop in another part of town.

A Southington teenager is facing various charges related to accident he allegedly caused on April 6 after fleeing from a traffic stop on Buckland Street and speeding away before crashing a short while later near the intersection of Burritt Street and Marion Avenue in Plantsville.

Alex Nevrivy, of 44 Beverly Drive, was arraigned in Bristol Superior Court Tuesday on charges of reckless driving, driving under the influence, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, failure to obey a stop sign, engaging police in a pursuit, failure to drive in proper lane, unsafe passing, first-degree reckless endangerment and interfering with an officer.

He was released after posting bond and is due back in court in May.

“The charges stem from a warrant arrest as part of an investigation into a series of incidents that ended with an accident on Burritt Street on April 6,” Southington Police Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz said Tuesday.

Police said Nevrivy was stopped by an officer in the area of Buckland Street on April 6 following a motor vehicle violation, but when the officer attempted to approach the vehicle, he put his vehicle back in drive and fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

According to a police report, Nevrivy proceeded to travel across town at a high rate of speed before losing control of the car he was driving and crashing into a utility pole before hitting another car.

“The vehicle involved struck a utility pole and then made contact with another vehicle traveling on Burritt Street,” Dobratz said in a press release following the accident. “The people that were seen fleeing the scene were later located. Injuries were reported and the injured parties were transported to local hospitals.”

Three Patch readers wrote that the incident led police to conduct a full K-9 search in the area, some watching as police dogs sniffed through their backyards.

The accident not only led to injuries, but also caused more than 100 Connecticut Light & Power customers to lose power for several hours. The utility pole was replaced following the crash, but no arrests were made as Nevrivy had fled the scene before police arrived.

No additional arrests are expected in the incident, police said.
